“1. Buy books about starting school and read them with your child. Such stories with a positive ending will cheer him/her up.
2. Avoid dramatic separation scenes. Children feel that their parents are anxious and this anxiety will rub off on them.
3.Encourage your child to fantasize about school and school life, to be curious about their new environment and the newness of their life.
4.Give him/her options and get his/her ideas when shopping for school and organizing his/her room. Implement what is possible.
5.If he/she wants, help him/her reduce anxiety by letting him/her take his/her favorite toy to school during the adjustment period.
6.It is not right to just leave a crying child. If your child is very reactive to you leaving him/her at school, talk to the administrators and move away from the school step by step.
7.Give your child detailed information about school, answer all their questions. Explain how much time he/she will spend at school in a way that he/she can understand, with concrete examples.
8.Make sure your child understands that you do not accept not going to school as an alternative and that you are very determined about it.
9. Do not make fun of the child who is anxious about going to school and do not make comparisons with anyone. On the contrary, tell him/her that you understand and convince him/her that this feeling is temporary.
10. When he/she returns home, ask him/her how his/her day was, but do not be insistent and give him/her time to share what he/she wants to share. Avoid asking questions that may cause anxiety about school”.
