15 tips to protect stomach health in summer

Gastroenterology Specialist. Dr. Adil Duman gave information about stomach problems seen in summer. Duman also made suggestions to protect stomach health.

Memorial Antalya Hospital Gastroenterology Department Specialist. Dr. Adil Duman pointed out that the digestive system weakens and slows down as the scorching days continue at full speed. Pointing out that changes in the weather not only cause fatigue, Duman said, “It also leads to changes in the functioning of the stomach and intestines. This causes various digestive problems such as loss of appetite, food poisoning and thirst in summer. Changing living and eating habits in summer negatively affect stomach health. Although it is thought that the stomach will relax on days when light and refreshing foods are preferred, the nutritional routine is disrupted and stomach complaints occur with the increase in alcohol consumption and change in sleeping hours, which may increase on vacation.”

“Summer hits the stomach”

Sharing information about stomach complaints that occur in summer, Duman continued his words as follows: “It mostly develops due to changing eating habits. Unhealthy diets made with weight concerns that start before the summer arrives bring along diseases such as indigestion, ulcers, gastritis and reflux seen in these months. On the other hand, the change in sleeping hours in summer causes eating habits late at night. This situation also triggers stomach complaints. Uncontrolled consumption of fizzy and iced drinks, which are thought to cool the body with increasing temperatures and increased need for fluid intake, leads to complaints such as indigestion, gastritis and reflux.”

“Pay attention to water consumption”

Emphasizing that although there is a decrease in the frequency of stomach and duodenal ulcers in the summer months and there is no increase in chronic complaints, changing lifestyle and going out of the usual routine will bring stomach problems, Duman said, “Water consumption is of great importance in order to minimize the risk of stomach complaints, as in many diseases, on hot and humid days. Especially people who have to work with physical activity in the heat should eat mainly vegetables and fruits and stay hydrated.”

“Things to consider for stomach health”

Sharing the things to be considered for stomach health in summer, Duman concluded his words as follows:

“Do not diet with an unconscious and unbalanced diet, do not eat a one-way diet. Increase the weight of vegetables and fruits in your diet in summer. Stay hydrated. Drink an average of 2.5-3 liters of water a day. Follow your dietitian's recommendations. Eat little, often and chew well. Do not fill your stomach completely when you eat. Get up from the table before you are full. Stop eating 2 hours before bedtime. Do not increase smoking and keep it to a minimum. Avoid frequent consumption of beverages such as coffee, alcohol and soft drinks as they can irritate and damage the stomach lining. Avoid excessively cold, hot, spicy, oily, greasy and tomato paste foods and drinks. Follow general cleanliness and hygiene rules. If you have chronic diseases, do not neglect your special diet and take your medication regularly. Try ways to cope with stress, get regular physical activity and rest as needed.
