Stating that approximately 2.5 million people in the world are diagnosed with breast cancer, General Surgery Specialist Dr. Ferhat Erdem Uğraş stated that this number is 25 thousand in Turkey.
Acıbadem Bursa Hospital General Surgery Specialist Dr. Ferhat Erdem Uğraş, who stated that breast cancer ranks first on the cancer frequency list in Turkey, pointed out that this number has gradually increased in recent years. Stating that approximately 2.5 million people in the world are diagnosed with breast cancer, Dr. Uğraş said, “In Turkey, this number has reached 25 thousand women. Every year, an average of 25 thousand women are diagnosed with breast cancer. With the imaging opportunities we have, it is possible to diagnose masses that are too small to be found in manual examination. The earlier you catch the disease, the easier it is to find a solution. Treatment success in early diagnosed breast cancer increases up to 95 percent. The earlier breast cancer is diagnosed, the lower the risk of death. Surgical treatment, surgical chemotherapy and postoperative radiotherapy significantly reduce the mortality rate from cancer.”
Screening methods should be applied for early diagnosis
She said that there are screening programs for the early diagnosis of breast cancer and thanks to these programs, even the smallest form of the tumor is detected, and said the following about which controls should be done at which age;
“Young women from the age of 20 should perform breast self-examination every month. During these checks between 4 and 10 days of menstruation, the armpit should also be checked. In this way, the woman who recognizes her own structure becomes able to notice changes. After the age of 30, while continuing self-checking, they should also have a breast ultrasound once a year. After the age of 40, mammography should be added to these controls once a year.”
Stating that when there is a suspicious situation as a result of the screening, a biopsy should be performed for definitive diagnosis, Dr. Ferhat Erdem Uğraş stated that some women avoid the control due to concerns expressed as 'what if it turns out' and continued his words as follows;
“Fear and anxiety cause postponement of controls. But we would like to warn you that controls should be done on time for early diagnosis. In early diagnosis, the treatment process is short and breast loss does not occur. In recent years, breast-conserving surgical methods are used by removing only the cancerous area, not the entire breast. Thus, there is no loss of limb. In cases where the entire breast has to be removed, breast reconstruction is possible. In the treatment of breast cancer, many specialists from surgery to radiation oncology, pathology to radiology work together and the best method is chosen for the patient. New methods are rapidly being developed in treatment. The treatment success of our patients is gradually increasing with new treatment methods including personalized treatments and smart drugs.”
