Making statements on World Heart Day, Kastamonu Provincial Health Director Uzm. Dr. Çağdaş Derdiyok noted that lifestyle increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and said, “Studies show that 80 percent of deaths from cardiovascular disease between the ages of 30-70 can be prevented with changes in lifestyle.”
Kastamonu Provincial Health Director Uzm. Dr. Çağdaş Derdiyok shared a message about World Heart Day and gave important advice to citizens to prevent cardiovascular diseases. Pointing out that unhealthy nutrition, physical inactivity, alcohol and tobacco use, air pollution and various diseases can trigger cardiovascular diseases, Derdiyok noted that individuals aged 40 and over should undergo cardiovascular risk assessment once a year. Emphasizing that a healthy life will reduce the risk of heart diseases, Derdiyok stated that the vital risk can be eliminated with early diagnosis.
Noting that cardiovascular diseases are considered a global public health problem, Derdiyok said, “Cardiovascular diseases can be caused by personal, behavioral, environmental and socioeconomic risk factors. Unhealthy diet, Physical inactivity, Alcohol use, Tobacco use, Air pollution, High blood pressure, High cholesterol, Diabetes, Obesity and kidney disease are among the most important risk factors. Family history, stress, ethnicity, gender and age can also influence the development of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, combating risk factors is the primary prevention method to prevent cardiovascular diseases or to stop their progression. Studies show that 80 percent of deaths from cardiovascular disease between the ages of 30 and 70 can be prevented with changes in lifestyle.”
Stating that cardiovascular risk assessment can be made by applying to family physicians, Derdiyok said, “Stopping the progression of these diseases and preventing the formation of new diseases due to these diseases through early diagnosis, effective treatment and monitoring of cardiovascular diseases is one of the most important steps of struggle. For this reason, our Ministry has developed an application called the Disease Management Platform (DMP), enabling primary healthcare providers to take a more active role in the early diagnosis, effective treatment and monitoring of chronic diseases. By carrying out the process in line with evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, it is aimed to control diseases and prevent individuals from experiencing loss of function and becoming disabled. Within the scope of the HMP, cardiovascular risk assessment is carried out at least once a year by our family physicians for individuals aged 40 and over. In the cardiovascular risk assessment, information on age, gender, smoking, blood pressure and cholesterol levels are taken, and the risk of developing a cardiovascular disease that could lead to death within 10 years is calculated using the data obtained. Based on the results of the cardiovascular risk assessment, our family physicians arrange the necessary treatments for patients, provide counseling on lifestyle changes, and refer them to Healthy Life Centers or hospitals when necessary. For a healthy heart, apply to your family physician, have your cardiovascular risk assessment, eat healthy, move, and stay away from smoking.”
