Stating that there has been an increase in cases of tick attachment to the eyelid and around the eyes in recent days, Ophthalmologist Opr. Dr. Nükhet Zaim said, “Tick bites that may be missed during the hazelnut collection period can be quite dangerous. Patients with tick bites on the eyelid may face a serious danger. If the treatment is delayed, the tick bite can cause serious problems in the eye, even loss of vision.”
The hazelnut picking season brings with it some health risks, especially for people living and working in the Black Sea Region. “It can lead to vision loss”
Stating that tick bites that may be overlooked during the hazelnut picking period can be quite dangerous, Opr. Prof. Dr. Nükhet Zaim said, “Since tick bites can cause serious diseases such as Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF), it is important for hazelnut pickers to be careful in this regard. Patients who are bitten by ticks on their eyelids may face a serious danger when they encounter this situation. Tick bites usually occur in thin-skinned and unprotected areas of the body, and the eyelid is one of these areas. If the treatment is delayed, the tick bite can lead to serious problems in the eye, even loss of vision.”
“Take protective measures when entering the garden”
Stating that they frequently encounter problems such as tick cases and twigs in the eye during the hazelnut picking season, Opr. Dr. Zaim said, “In August, we frequently encountered cases of ticks sticking to the eye due to the hazelnut season. It is very important to wear sunglasses or protective glasses while picking hazelnuts to prevent such problems. This makes it difficult for ticks to reach the eyelids and also provides protection from dust, insects and other foreign objects. It is recommended to carefully apply insect repellent sprays around the eyes to prevent ticks from getting close to the eye area. However, care should be taken to avoid direct contact with the eyes. It is possible to protect the eye area by wearing a wide-brimmed hat or visor. These accessories can prevent ticks from reaching the face and eye area through the hair. The eye area and body should be checked for ticks at regular intervals. If symptoms such as redness, swelling or itching around the eyes are noticed, a health institution should be consulted immediately. Covering the neck and face area with long-sleeved clothes and shawls can make it difficult for ticks to reach these areas. The eye area is also indirectly protected in this way. Avoid touching your eyes directly with your hands, especially after a long time outdoors. Ticks or other foreign substances on your hands can get into your eyes.”
“It can lead to serious infections”
Underlining that a tick bite can lead to serious problems in the eye and even loss of vision if treatment is delayed, Opr. Dr. Nükhet Zaim said, “If the tick stays on the eyelid or around the eye for a long time, it can cause serious infections, inflammation in the eye (eg keratitis, conjunctivitis) and damage to the eye tissue. If such complications are not recognized and treated early, the risk of permanent eye damage and vision loss increases. Some infections that can be carried by the tick can affect the structures inside the eye, weakening vision and leading to complete loss of vision. Therefore, it is vital to consult an ophthalmologist immediately if the tick bite is noticed in the eye.”
“Never remove it yourself”
Stating that the earlier the treatment process is initiated, the lower the risk of complications and the preservation of vision can be ensured, Opr. Dr. Nükhet Zaim gave the following statements:
“If a tick is stuck to your eyelid or around your eyes, never try to remove it yourself. Improper removal of the tick can lead to serious eye infections and damage. Do not neglect to take the necessary precautions to protect your eye health, especially during the hazelnut picking season.”
