Stroke is a common health problem, especially in the elderly. Due to the increase in its incidence and the fact that it is an important public health problem, October 29 has been designated as World Stroke Day to draw attention to the disease. Internal Medicine and Geriatrics Specialist Dr. Abdülkadir Dağ said, “Various health problems and physical changes that occur with aging can increase the risk of stroke. It is critical for elderly individuals to be informed about this issue in order to protect their health.”
It is vital for older individuals to recognize the symptoms of stroke. Stating that the symptoms seen at the time of stroke include sudden dizziness, difficulty in speaking, asymmetry in the face or arm, and sudden loss of vision, Dr. Abdülkadir Dağ, Internal Medicine and Geriatrics Specialist at Medicana Kadıköy Hospital, said: “Early recognition of symptoms, rapid intervention and effective management of the treatment process can improve the quality of life of individuals who have had a stroke and increase their survival rates. For this reason, it is of great importance that elderly individuals and their families are aware of stroke symptoms, risk factors and treatment methods.” Risk factors for stroke become more critical in elderly individuals. At this point, he emphasized the importance of regular health checks. “In addition to chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol levels, intense stress sources and smoking also increase the risk of stroke,” said Prof. Dr. Abdülkadir Dağ.
Early intervention is critical
Stroke treatment varies depending on the type of stroke and the patient's condition. Internal Medicine and Geriatrics Specialist Dr. Abdülkadir Dağ said, “In case of ischemic stroke, timely intervention can dissolve the blood clot. For this purpose, a drug called tPA (tissue plasminogen activator) can be used. In some cases, it is also possible to physically remove the clot with a method called mechanical thrombectomy. Hemorrhagic stroke usually requires surgical intervention. This may involve closing the source of bleeding or draining the blood clots. In both cases, early diagnosis and treatment are vital. Stroke survivors should be transported to hospital as soon as possible and treatment initiated. Early intervention can reduce possible complications and increase the chance of recovery.”
Pointing out that the rehabilitation methods to be followed in the post-treatment process are also important, Uzm. Dr. Abdülkadir Dağ said, “Rehabilitation is a critical stage for regaining physical abilities and supporting independent living. Supportive methods such as physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy play a major role in the recovery process of individuals. Recovery after stroke is vital to improve the quality of life and regain independence. The recovery process requires a comprehensive physical, mental and emotional rehabilitation program after treatment. Physical therapy includes exercises to improve motor skills, while speech therapy is important to regain communication skills.”
Support from family members affects the recovery process
Psychological support is also an important part of the process. Dr. Abdülkadir Dağ, Internal Medicine and Geriatrics Specialist at Medicana Kadıköy Hospital, said, “Individuals who have had a stroke may face emotional difficulties. Therefore, sessions with psychologists or therapists can improve their emotional well-being and help them reintegrate into society. Family support also plays a critical role in the recovery process. Family members can be an important source of motivation and moral support for patients. In addition, involving families in the rehabilitation process will contribute to a more effective recovery of patients. Family members should have information to support stroke survivors. Being sensitive to their needs plays a big role in their recovery process.”
Underlining that it is possible to prevent stroke, Uzm. Dr. Abdülkadir Dağ said, “Exercising regularly, eating healthy and avoiding smoking are among the most effective ways to reduce the risk of stroke. Stress management is also important.
It is possible to reduce the risk of stroke with healthy lifestyle choices and regular check-ups.”
