Anti-cancer properties detected in carrots

Within the scope of the project carried out at Hitit University, the anti-cancer properties of melanin compound obtained from carrot peel on lung cells were determined.

Faculty of Engineering Assistant Professor Gamze Nur Müjdeci started a study to investigate the properties of melanin, which can be obtained from natural and sustainable sources. With the study carried out within the scope of the TÜBİTAK project, the anti-cancer properties of melanin obtained from carrot peel using fermentation method on lung cells were revealed.

Prof. Dr. Assist. Prof. Dr. Müjdeci said that the findings of the study have the potential to open new horizons in the fields of biotechnology and cancer treatment.

Noting that Çorum and its surroundings have a high potential in terms of food industry and agricultural waste, Müjdeci underlined that the utilization of these wastes is of great importance both environmentally and economically.

Stating that they started working with this in mind, Müjdeci said, “Among the many wastes tested, melanin obtained by fermentation from carrot peel constitutes a striking example in terms of transforming these wastes into a valuable biotechnological product. Such practices make significant contributions to the circular economy and encourage the transformation of waste into high value-added products.”

Noting that organic wastes in the garbage category of the research can be used as valuable raw materials with innovative approaches, Müjdeci said: “The melanin we obtained from carrot peel exhibited significant anti-cancer properties on lung cells. These findings are promising for future cancer treatment methods and prove once again how important the production-oriented studies of our biotechnology laboratory are. Besides its anti-cancer properties, other potential uses of melanin as a colorant include different industries such as cosmetics, food additives and biomaterials production. This versatile compound has the capacity to offer innovative solutions in various industries.”

Müjdeci explained that as Hitit University, they aim to contribute to the environment and public health with our scientific research and to produce sustainable solutions, and added that in this context, they will continue their studies in the field of fermentation technologies and biotechnology without slowing down.
