Antibiotic warning for diarrhea

Infectious Diseases Specialist Dr. Kübra Erbay, who said that diarrhea spreads from person to person, stated that those who do not follow personal hygiene rules have a high risk of diarrhea and those with diarrhea should not use antibiotics.

In the summer season, the effect of hot weather and low personal hygiene conditions cause diarrhea cases. Infectious Diseases Specialist Dr. Kübra Erbay, who works at Kırşehir Training and Research Hospital, warned citizens about diarrhea. Erbay said, “In cases where personal hygiene conditions are low, the disease can be transmitted from person to person. Another way diarrhea spreads is the storage of food prepared under unhygienic conditions. Seafood caught in polluted waters can also cause acute intestinal infections. It can develop as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and fever. Sometimes it can also cause intestinal gas accumulation and headache. It is more common in infants and young children and care should be taken. Antibiotic treatment is not required in these cases. Antidiarrheal drugs should never be used.”

Stating that hand washing is effective in solving intestinal infections, Erbay said, “Hand washing is the most effective method in preventing infections. As a personal protection method, hands should be washed before and after meals and before preparing meals.”
