Pointing out that giving antipyretic drugs to children before or after vaccines is a common mistake, Pediatrician Dr. İlter Paydur said, “We frequently receive questions from parents who will have their children vaccinated about whether to give antipyretic drugs to children before or after vaccines. When I ask the reason for this, they say that they receive information in this direction from the people around them. They want to prescribe antipyretics to use before or after vaccination. This is a common mistake and a wrong statement. Because using antipyretics before or after vaccination reduces the effectiveness of the vaccine. This has also been shown by scientific studies. My request to parents is not to use antipyretics before or immediately after vaccination.”
“The only exception is the meningitis vaccine”
Pointing out that the only exception to using antipyretics before vaccines is meningitis vaccines, Uzm. Dr. Paydur made the following recommendations:
“As an exception, we give antipyretics to children before meningitis vaccines. We constantly inform their families about this. We do not give antipyretics before and after any other vaccines. If your child has a very high fever of 38.5 degrees or becomes very restless, you can consult your doctor and give antipyretics, but we do not use antipyretics in mild restlessness or 37.5 degrees fever.”
