Bilecik Provincial Health Director Dr. Ferhat Damkacı explained that approximately 7 thousand people were diagnosed with lymphoma in 1 year and emphasized the importance of this disease.
Stating that the lymphatic system is an important part of the body, Dr. Ferhat Damkacı said that the body's network that fights germs includes lymph nodes, spleen, thymus gland, bone marrow and other body parts. “Lymphatic system cancer is called lymphoma. Lymphomas are malignant lymph node diseases that develop from cells called lymphocytes naturally found in lymphoid tissues. They are also known as Hodgkin's disease and account for about 25 percent of lymphomas. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is called 'Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma/NHL' in medicine and accounts for approximately 75 percent of cases. Approximately 7 thousand people were diagnosed with lymphoma within a year. Non-Hodgkin lymphomas are among the top ten cancer types in both men and women. It accounts for 15 percent of childhood cancers and ranks second. In general, there are more than 80 subtypes of lymphomas and the clinical treatment of each varies. The exact cause of lymphomas is unknown. However, various risk factors are associated with the likelihood of developing lymphoma.”
“Pay attention to weakness, weight loss and fever in symptoms”
Pointing out the symptoms, Dr. Damkacı said, “The most common feature of lymphoma symptoms is painless swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck, armpit and groin areas. Other symptoms that can be found in patients are fever, weight loss, night sweats, weakness, itching on the skin, the cause of which cannot be fully explained. These complaints can also be seen in the course of other diseases such as influenza. Therefore, only a physician can diagnose lymphoma in patients with such symptoms. In the presence of the symptoms listed above, a physician should be consulted. The most important steps in the diagnosis of lymphoma are detailed history and physical examination. If suspicious findings are detected in the history and examination, additional diagnostic methods such as lymph node biopsy, bone marrow biopsy, imaging tests, blood count, blood tests, biochemical examinations, imaging tests (MRI scan, PET scan, X-rays) are used. There are different treatment methods depending on the type of disease. In addition to classical treatment methods such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, biological therapies (monoclonal antibodies) and stem cell transplantation can be used in appropriate patients. Surgery is rarely used in the treatment of lymphoma, except for the purposes of biopsy and determining the condition of the disease.”
