Attention to first aid method in drowning cases

Private Ümit Batıkent Hospital Emergency Service Specialist Dr. Ünal Tetik gave information about the first aid method to be applied in cases of drowning.

Emergency Service Specialist Dr. Ünal Tetik talked about the first aid method to be applied in cases of drowning. Stating that drowning cases are very common in the summer months, Dr. Ünal Tetik stated that 40 people die every 1 hour in the world due to drowning. Emergency Service Specialist Dr. Ünal Tetik explained what to pay attention to in the pool or sea during the summer months. Dr. Tetik said, “In the summer months, those with chronic diseases (such as epilepsy, heart) may become uncomfortable in the water and drowning may occur even though they know how to swim because they exert effort in the water in the heat. Especially when the stomach is full, you should never enter the pool or the sea on a full stomach and with alcohol.”

“Drowning in water is more likely to be rescued”

Dr. Ünal Tetik stated that contrary to popular belief, autopsies performed after drowning do not reveal drowning by water getting into the lungs and blocking them, and said, “In drowning in water; the patient's heart stops, breathing stops, and interestingly, the body squeezes the throat and a dry drowning occurs. This situation is more common especially in the pediatric group. Drownings in water are luckier than normal drownings, these people are more likely to be rescued in a healthy way. These patients can be rescued very easily, so it is important to know what to do in such cases.”

Heart massage

About what to do in case of drowning, Dr. Tetik continued as follows;

“If the person cannot swim, he/she should definitely not intervene, if there is a lifeguard, if there is no lifeguard, someone who knows how to swim well should intervene. People who cannot swim can also intervene in the drowning person by extending a bagel or a stick. Otherwise, it has been observed that people who do not know how to swim also drowned in the water they entered to rescue. Before all interventions, 112 should be called first and breathing and pulse should be checked after the person is taken out of the water. If there is no pulse and respiration in the drowning person, it is of great benefit to perform heart massage. Heart massage; we can save this person by pressing the middle part of the chest 30 times and breathing through the mouth 5 times.”
