Attention to permanent makeup applications: “Conditions that can lead to blindness may occur”
Speaking about the effect of make-up materials on eye health and permanent applications, Ophthalmologist Prof. Dr. Arzu Taşkıran Çömez said, “Make-up has a very important place in the daily life of women, but we should not share our products with others because it increases the risk of infection considerably. We should pay attention to the expiration date of the products, and another important thing is to make sure that the products given to us to try in stores are disposable. Permanent make-up is a tattoo process, with this process, intraocular inflammation, conditions that can lead to blindness may also occur.”
While make-up applications are frequently preferred by many women in the society, experts frequently emphasize the points to be considered when using make-up to protect eye health. Stating that reasons such as unconscious use of cosmetic products, not paying attention to hygiene, sharing the products used with others pose a risk to eye health, Prof. Dr. Cemil Taşcıoğlu City Hospital Department of Ophthalmology Training Supervisor Prof. Dr. Arzu Taşkıran Çömez also made important warnings. Prof. Dr. Çömez gave information about the make-up processes in people who use lenses and made explanations about permanent make-up applications.
“Situations that can lead to blindness may occur”
Stating that cosmetic products are highly preferred by women, but there are points to be considered when using them, Ophthalmologist Prof. Dr. Arzu Taşkıran Çömez said:
“Makeup has a very important place in a woman's daily life. As long as we pay attention to some issues, we may not have much trouble. One of the most important of these issues is that we need to keep in mind that make-up materials are personalized. We should not share our own products with our friends or family members because this increases the risk of infection considerably. Another important thing is to make sure that the products we are given to try in stores are opened only for us and are disposable. Since permanent applications are sometimes applied to patients who have permanently lost their eyelashes after chemotherapy or various skin diseases, I think it can be applied if it is done by appropriate people, experts with appropriate products in sterile environments. I think it will be appropriate from time to time when necessary, not a false eyelash application to be done every day. It may have some side effects and important complications. Infection is the most important of these, permanent eyelash loss, that is, you can lose your own eyelashes. The eyelid may turn inward or outward. In addition, permanent makeup is a tattoo process, a process we call micro pigmentation, with this process, intraocular inflammation, which we call uveitis in the eye, can lead to blindness.”
“We should pay attention to the expiration date of make-up materials”
Stating that the expiration dates of make-up products should not be ignored, Prof. Dr. Çömez said, “Germs, fungi, bacteria can grow after a certain date in the liquid content of make-up materials, we need to pay attention to the expiration date. As with every product, there is an expiration date in make-up materials, maybe many of us do not pay much attention. We need to use them for a maximum of 3-6 months and then throw them away and definitely switch to new products because when we take them out, we increase the risk of infection, we bring them back inside. There may be some contamination even from the air. In patients who use contact lenses, we wash and dry our hands before wearing them. Then we put on our lenses, we should apply our make-up after we put on our lenses. Before removing the makeup, we will remove our contact lens and we need to remove our makeup with a cleanser. We should definitely clean our eye area and face before going to bed with a soft water-based cleanser. We should do this with soft movements, without rubbing or tugging, because there are ligaments around the eyes that make our eyes look aesthetically healthier and more beautiful, we should not loosen them. Some allergic conditions may occur depending on the make-up materials. A makeup material that is good for you may cause allergies in me. So when we first buy it, we need to try the product on the inside of our wrist before applying it around the eyes. If an allergic condition does not occur, we need to apply it around the eyes. In case of infection while applying make-up, that is, when there are symptoms such as burrs, waking, stinging, sensitivity to light, we will first remove the make-up. We will stop wearing makeup for a while. Unfortunately, we will throw away all the makeup materials we have. After 2 weeks of treatment, we can continue our make-up with new make-up materials, but I would like to say that make-up materials should be completely discarded at this stage.”
