In Diyarbakır, Dermatology Specialist Dr. Süleyman Bağlam warned that citizens exposed to sun rays in the summer months should apply sunscreen to the body every 3 hours to protect their skin.
Citizens, who are overwhelmed by the temperatures above seasonal norms across the country, are in demand for sunscreens to protect their skin. Experts point out that sunscreens used under the stairs can cause eczema, allergies and worse conditions.
Dr. Süleyman Bağlam, Dermatology Specialist at Memorial Dicle Hospital, said that the disease can progress to skin cancer if exposed to direct sunlight.
Bağlam said, “We are in the period when the sun's rays are the steepest and most intense. Although the sun's rays are very necessary and healthy for our lives, they have great damages to our skin. We can divide these damages into 4 groups. The first is aging our skin. Secondly, it causes spot formation on our skin. Third and most importantly, it causes skin cancers. In hospitals and polyclinics, we see that elderly patients come with skin cancer very often. Fourthly, the sun can cause burns on our skin and cause us to receive extra treatment and costs. We should definitely use sunscreen to protect ourselves from such damages of the sun.”
Underlining that it is necessary to go out half an hour after using sunscreen, Dr. Bağlam said, “Sunscreens are basically divided into two. Either physical sunscreens or chemical sunscreens. Physical sunscreens usually contain Titanium or Zinc oxide. These are especially suitable for sensitive skin, children, pregnant and breastfeeding. Chemical sunscreens can also be applied to patients without such indications. There is a situation we call the two-finger rule when using sunscreen. When applying sunscreen on our face, it should be applied along one finger. And it is necessary to apply sunscreen to the whole face with one finger on one side of the face and one finger on the other side. Sunscreen should be applied not only on the face but also on the ears and neck. It is necessary to use the sunscreen half an hour before and go out that way. Because the effect of these starts after an average of 15-20 minutes or even half an hour. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to use sunscreen in the areas we mentioned.”
Stating that citizens should prefer sunscreens approved by the ministry, Bağlam said, “We said chemical sunscreens. Especially those with chemical content may also be carcinogenic sunscreens that disrupt the endocrine system. Therefore, the sunscreen must be approved by the Ministry of Health. Therefore, it is very dangerous to use products under the stairs. Since their protection has not been tested, we may not get the protection we want, and it may cause eczema, allergies and worse conditions due to sunscreen.”
Finally, Baglam warned citizens that sunscreen should be used every 3 hours during the day, “Sunscreens lose their effect in about 2-3 hours during the day. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to renew the sunscreen within 3 hours. If we go out and walk around for hours, we can see burns due to sunscreen, more precisely because we use it incorrectly. Therefore, we need to use it every 3 hours and repeat it.”
