Experts advising people with the complaint of 'I am very cold' in these days when temperatures are above seasonal norms point out that coldness can be a harbinger of different diseases in the body. In order to prevent diseases, it is important to make tests and complete the missing vitamins.
While the complaints of 'I'm cold' started to increase in these days when the air temperatures started to drop, some citizens are trying to take precautions by wearing thermal, wool or thick clothing. Experts point out that this complaint may be a harbinger of diseases due to the lack of some vitamins in the body.
Underlining that chills are a very normal reaction in the body, Medicana Konya Hospital Chief Physician Check Up Specialist Dr. Elif Ünüvar said, “Especially with the period of these winter months, patients spend less time outside and we want to escape home more because of the cold weather or we want to buy something thick immediately. With the cold, we normally consider chills as a reaction of our body at the moment. But of course, we should not necessarily consider it as cold. There are underlying reasons for people who complain of constant coldness. At the beginning of these, people who say 'I am very cold' may develop flu infections, inflammations in the body, such as colds, flu, bronchitis, especially with the entry of winter months. When we give them symptomatic treatment, the effect of chills will disappear along with the fever. However, if they still feel cold despite these complaints, and if they continue to feel cold in normal situations, for example, when there is no effect of cold, we would definitely want to re-evaluate our further examinations and researches and the underlying causes.”
Hypoglycemia or vitamin deficiencies may be underlying the chills
Pointing out that there are many causes of chills and that many vitamins may be missing, Dr. Elif Ünüvar said, “The most important of these is what we call hypoglycemia in the first place. Hypoglycemia is when blood sugar is below 50. This is usually what we see in our young girls in our situations due to unbalanced nutrition, as a result of improper diets. In hypoglycemia, our sugar balance in the body is disrupted. With this, an irregularity occurs in the blood circulation and we can see our patients' complaints of constantly feeling cold in such cases. Secondly, vitamin deficiencies usually underlie the causes of chills. These are vitamin B12 deficiency, zinc and vitamin D deficiencies, and in cases of anemia, which we call anemia, our patients usually come with complaints of 'I am very cold'. In such cases, we perform a series of tests and examinations while evaluating the patients. In terms of vitamins, whether they are present or not, when we find disorders in these depending on nutritional balances, we go with treatments for this.”
Those who say they are constantly cold should definitely consult a doctor
Dr. Ünüvar continued as follows: “The causes of chills, which are countless, may sound very simple, but they are vascular problems. We see vascular problems very often, especially in our patients who smoke. These are the disorders we call burgers and Raynaud's phenomenon in the fingers. Due to these, there is no blood circulation in our veins, especially due to smoking. Sometimes we also have genetic hereditary vascular diseases. Under these circulatory disorders, especially the causes of chills, chills in the foreground, then what happens in natural periods, vascular occlusions occur, bruising occurs in the fingers. As the symptoms of the patient increase, our complaints about these continue to increase. Under the causes, we have anemia levels, which we call anemia. These are already 70 to 80 percent of anemias, especially in women. These are conditions that we see due to inadequate and unbalanced nutrition and blood loss. Sometimes we also see anemias in genetic disorders called thalassemia. These are also under the reasons that we can count under the cold. The weather is normal, I will dress a little bit thicker, etc. These are things that we do not attach much importance to, but in fact, due to these reasons, especially in terms of hypothyroidism, vascular disorders, anemias, vitamin deficiencies, some metabolic disorders, chills may be a preliminary reaction of the body for us. The body gives us this with chills, and then other symptoms follow. Even if we say a person or even a healthy individual, we inform our patients that an individual who constantly experiences the complaint of 'I am cold' should definitely apply to the relevant units or these check-up centers and have these problems checked and evaluated before they progress.”
