Fitness Trainer Seyhun Açıkgöz, who gives important information about supplements and warns athletes, said, “Supplements can harm your health if taken more than the recommended amount. Most of the supplements in today's industry are unnecessary. Of course, they have benefits for the body, but most of the amino acids in the supplements are found in the foods you eat. For an individual starting sports, giving money to supplements without adequate rest, vigorous training and balanced nutrition is just a waste of money.”
Seyhun Açıkgöz, who runs a gym in Kocaeli's Izmit district, who was caught up in the sports fury in 1989 and is now a 3rd level senior coach, told what should be known about supplementary nutritional powders (supplements). Giving important information, Fitness Trainer Seyhun Açıkgöz said, “Too much of everything is harmful. Even if you drink water, if you drink more than you should, it will harm your health. Naturally, supplements can also harm your health if taken more than the recommended amount. Most of the supplements in today's industry are unnecessary. Of course they have benefits for the body, but most of the amino acids in supplements are found in the foods you eat. Therefore, it is not necessary to take it, but as long as the instructions for use are followed, there is no harm in taking protein powder.”
“Seeing protein powder as harmful has the same logic as seeing milk and dairy products as harmful”
Speaking about what protein powder is, Seyhun Açıkgöz said, “Protein powder is an isolated form of animal and plant foods containing protein. These can be foods such as soy, casein (milk protein), whey, eggs, or even meat. By this logic, seeing protein powder as harmful is the same as seeing milk and dairy products as harmful. In addition, if protein powder was harmful, protein milk would not be provided to people in need of care in hospitals to meet their protein needs.”
“Giving money to supplements without vigorous training and balanced nutrition is just a waste of money”
Underlining that protein powder and other products are helpful, Açıkgöz said, “For an individual starting sports, giving money to supplements without adequate rest, vigorous training and balanced nutrition is only a waste of money. The priority in nutrition is definitely food consumption, not supplements. You use the supplement, but it will never replace a good food you eat. Even if protein powder has its benefits, its consumption is optional. Of course, instead of taking protein powder, you can prefer protein-containing foods such as fish, chicken and meat, which contain many minerals and vitamins.”
