Baby's first doping: Breast milk

Emphasizing that breast milk increases immunity and supports the brain development of children, Pediatrics and Social Pediatrics Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Tubaş said, “Let's support mothers to breastfeed exclusively for the first 6 months. Until the age of 2, breastfeeding should continue even with additional foods.”

Expressing that breast milk is very important for everyone, Acıbadem Kayseri Hospital Pediatrics and Social Pediatrics Specialist Assoc. Dr. Filiz Tubaş gave useful information on the occasion of Breastfeeding Week. Speaking about the benefits of breastfeeding for everyone, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tubaş said, “Breastfeeding is very important not only for the mother's health but for everyone, even for the country's economy. One of the most common things we encounter is the fear of mothers; 'I cannot breastfeed my child. Will I never be able to breastfeed? However, this process is a learnable process.”

“The first thousand days of the baby are very important”

Pointing out that the rate of exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months is very low in our country, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tubaş said, “It is very important and vital to breastfeed for the first 6 months and after 6 months, breastfeeding with complementary foods until the age of 2. The period from the day the baby falls into the mother's womb, which we call ‘the first thousand days’, until the age of 2 is very important for the baby's nutrition, developing immunity against allergic conditions, fighting diseases such as cancer and increasing immunity.”

“Breast milk is important for the mental and physical development of babies”

Stating that breast milk is very important for both physical and mental development of babies, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tubaş said, “Each mother secretes milk specific to her baby. We think that breast milk protects babies from pneumonia, celiac disease and diabetes. It is also very important to give breast milk for healthy growth. Breast milk is really necessary for children's brain development and better school success.”

“It is also important for maternal health”

Stating that this situation is also very important for maternal health, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tubaş called on mothers not to worry about not being able to breastfeed their children. Stating that she herself experienced this process as a mother, she emphasized that it is indispensable for mother and baby health for mothers to be willing to breastfeed and to reorganize their postpartum social life according to breastfeeding. She stated that they will always support them in case of any problems.
