Be careful when eating nuts: You could lose your teeth

The number of patients applying to physicians with the complaint of tooth fracture while consuming nuts has increased. Damage to the teeth, especially during chewing, caused dentists to sound the alarm. Specialist Dentist Nur Çatalbaş said, “Although nuts are known as healthy snacks, they can have unexpected negative effects on dental health. In cases where the fracture is too large, the tooth may need to be extracted.”

Stating that although nuts are very healthy in terms of the nutrients they contain, their hard structure can put pressure on the teeth, Specialist Dentist Nur Çatalbaş from Istanbul Gelisim University Dental Hospital said, “Especially hard nuts such as walnuts, hazelnuts and peanuts can carry risks that may cause teeth to break. Dentists state that such dental problems are mostly related to teeth that have lost their durability. Especially teeth with root canal treatment, crowns or large fillings may be at increased risk of fracture when chewed with hard nuts.”

Specialist Dentist Nur Çatalbaş listed some basic measures to prevent tooth fractures:

“Maintaining dental health: First of all, it is necessary to strengthen teeth that have lost their health and durability. Therefore, regular dental check-ups should be emphasized. In addition, if we have habits such as existing problems in our teeth, teeth clenching or teeth grinding, we should report these situations to the dentist and have the necessary treatment done.”

“Nutrition habits: Foods that are too hard on our teeth, such as nuts and olive seeds, should be avoided. Chewing these can cause damage to the teeth.”

“Tooth protection methods: Habits such as clenching and grinding can cause tooth fractures. In this case, using night plaques is an important protection method. If these aligners are not enough, advanced treatment methods should be evaluated.”

“If the fracture is too large, the tooth may need to be extracted”

Stating that in case of tooth fracture, it is necessary to consult a dentist immediately, Specialist Dentist Nur Çatalbaş explained the intervention process as follows:

“First examination and x-ray: The dentist examines the broken tooth and the surrounding living tissues. If necessary, X-rays are taken to evaluate the internal structure of the tooth.

Treatment methods: Treatment methods vary depending on the size of the fracture. If the pulp tissue inside the tooth is not exposed, treatment may only be possible with filling. However, if the tooth is broken down to the living tissue, root canal treatment and then filling or coating applications may be required. In some cases, if the fracture is very large, the tooth may need to be extracted.”

Stating that the treatment process will vary according to the size of the fracture, Dentist Nur Çatalbaş said, “While a simple filling procedure can be completed in a single session, procedures such as root canal treatment and coating may require more than one session. The healing process may also vary depending on the treatment applied. Although nuts are healthy foods, their effects on dental health should not be ignored. Careful consumption, regular dental checks and necessary protective measures should be taken to prevent tooth fractures.”
