Beware of bone tumors

SANKO University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Dr. Lecturer. Prof. Dr. Toktamış Savaş stated that benign primary bone tumors (bone-derived tumors) are usually detected incidentally and said, “As with all malignant tumors, early diagnosis of primary bone tumors saves lives.”

Emphasizing that primary bone tumors are tumors that start from bone origin, that is, bone origin, Dr. Lecturer. Prof. Dr. Toktamış Savaş said that they are seen in two forms as benign (Benign) and malignant (Malignant).

Pointing out that bone-derived tumors are usually detected by chance, Dr. Lecturer. Prof. Dr. Savaş said, “Primary bone tumors are mostly benign. Malignant ones appear with a painless and fast-growing mass, and sometimes the patient comes to us with pain and tenderness.”

Diagnostic methods

Giving information about diagnostic methods, Dr. Lecturer. Prof. Dr. Savaş stated that the most commonly used method is plain radiography, followed by CT (Computed tomography) and MR (Magnetic resonance imaging).

Explaining that Pet-CT is used to determine the course of malignant tumors and to see the spread called metastasis, Dr. Lecturer. Prof. Dr. Savaş stated that the final diagnosis is made with a biopsy taken from bone or soft tissue.

Treatment methods

Stating that benign tumors are generally followed up, and different surgical treatment methods are applied in some of them due to the risk of fracture, Dr. Lecturer. Prof. Dr. Savaş shared the following information about the treatment of primary bone tumors:

“All malignant tumors must be surgically removed. At the same time, agents called radiotherapy or chemotherapy are also used in malignant tumors.”
