Beware of hand, foot and mouth disease in children

Dr. Naim Ay from Private Ümit Vişnelik Hospital informed about hand, foot and mouth disease, which is very common especially in primary school children.

Giving information about hand, foot and mouth disease, which is especially common in children, Private Ümit Vişnelik Hospital Pediatrician Dr. Naim Ay made important explanations about the contagiousness, symptoms, treatment methods and prevention methods of this disease. Stating that hand, foot and mouth disease is usually caused by a type of virus called coxsackievirus, Dr. Ay said, “This disease is seen especially in children under the age of 5 and can be transmitted very easily. Since children's immune systems are not yet fully developed, they can be vulnerable to such infections.”

Stating that the disease is very common this year in people aged 10 and above, Dr. Naim Ay added that it can also cause complaints of heart joint involvement, although very rarely.

Symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease

Stating that hand and foot disease is usually mild but can cause disturbing symptoms, Dr. Ay said, “The first symptoms in children include fever, loss of appetite, weakness and sore throat. After these symptoms, small blisters may form in the mouth and rashes may appear on the hands and feet. If the child's fever is high and feeding becomes difficult due to sores in the mouth, a doctor should definitely be consulted.”

Treatment methods

Dr. Ay said that hand, foot and mouth disease can usually heal on its own, but some treatment methods can be applied to alleviate the symptoms, “There is no specific treatment for this disease, but some painkillers can be used to lower children's fever and relieve pain. Especially fluid consumption is very important; children should be given plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.”

Ways of prevention

Emphasizing that hygiene is of great importance in preventing hand, foot and mouth disease, Dr. Ay made the following recommendations:

“This disease is highly contagious, so children should wash their hands frequently and especially stay away from sick people. In kindergartens and schools, regular cleaning should be done to reduce the risk of transmission and children who show signs of illness should be kept at home for a while. In addition, a healthy diet to strengthen the immune system also provides an important protective effect.”

Dr. Naim Ay from Private Ümit Vişnelik Hospital warned parents to pay attention to their children's hygiene during this period and emphasized the importance of getting medical support early in the disease.
