Beware of mushroom poisoning

Düzce Provincial Health Director Dr. Yasin Yılmaz warned against poisoning related to mushrooms that grow spontaneously in nature with the onset of precipitation and pointed out that banderoled culture mushrooms should be preferred.

It was stated that due to the increase in precipitation throughout the country, there may be an increase in poisoning cases due to the increase in the reproduction and consumption of mushrooms growing in nature.

Health Director Dr. Yasin Yılmaz also warned citizens against mushroom poisoning. Pointing out that serious poisoning that can result in death can be seen as a result of eating raw or cooked mushrooms that grow in natural environments and contain poison in their structure in the form of fresh, dried or canned, Dr. Yılmaz said, “Poisonous mushrooms grow in natural environments in our country and citizens are very popular with these mushrooms. Mushroom poisonings are seen especially in spring and autumn seasons when rainfall is abundant. It cannot be understood whether a mushroom is poisonous or not by the color, smell and taste of its flesh. It should not be forgotten that there are also poisonous mushrooms growing in natural areas in our region.”

“Drowsiness occurs with drowsiness within 2 hours”
Prof. Dr. Yılmaz stated that the poison in the mushroom can appear within 2 to 6 hours depending on the nature of the poison in the mushroom and can vary and said, “Within 2 hours after the mushroom is eaten, drowsiness, drowsiness, low blood pressure, blurred vision, flushing of the face and neck, metal taste in the mouth, nausea, vomiting, sweating; 6 hours after some species are eaten, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, palpitations, abdominal pain, liver and kidney dysfunction and symptoms of poisoning resulting in death can be seen. Our citizens should never consume mushrooms growing in nature, and banded cultivated mushrooms should be preferred instead of mushrooms growing in natural areas. Since cultivated mushrooms do not contain poisonous substances, poisoning is out of the question. However, due to the environment in which these mushrooms grow, some microorganisms may be found on the mushrooms. It should be noted that very mild stomach and intestinal complaints may develop as a result of eating raw mushrooms contaminated with these microorganisms. In addition, when buying mushrooms, packaged mushrooms should be preferred and attention should be paid to whether there are labels on the packaging with information to inform the consumer.”
Yılmaz finally stated that the National Poison Advisory Center provides 24/7 uninterrupted service on poisoning and that citizens who want to get information in case of need can call the National Poison Advisory Center at 114.
