Beware of mushroom poisoning: It can leave permanent damage to the body

Çankırı Provincial Health Director Dr. Hüseyin Sarıkaya, who warned about mushroom poisoning, which became widespread with the arrival of autumn, said that it can leave irreversible damage to the body.

In Çankırı, mushrooms started to attract intense interest from citizens in the fall. Çankırı Provincial Health Director Dr. Hüseyin Sarıkaya, who warned citizens about the problems that poisonous mushrooms can cause, pointed out that poisonous and non-poisonous types of mushrooms are very similar to each other. Pointing out that the consumption of poisonous mushrooms can lead to serious health problems, Sarıkaya said, “When we see mushrooms, the first question that comes to our mind is ‘is it poisonous’. Mushroom poisoning usually occurs when poisonous mushrooms are mistakenly perceived as non-poisonous. Because there are different types of mushrooms that look exactly alike in shape and color. For example, the poisonous Amanita species can easily be confused with the non-poisonous Agaricus species. There are more than 10,000 mushroom species worldwide, but only 50 to 100 of them are potentially poisonous. Mushroom poisoning usually results in mild or moderate symptoms of toxic effects, deaths are rare. Severe mushroom-related toxicity or death is more common in adults. People who eat the same mushroom dish may not all be poisoned. While one person has no complaints, the other may develop severe conditions that can lead to death. This is due to the amount of poisonous mushrooms eaten or the fact that one or a few poisonous mushrooms mixed in non-poisonous mushrooms do not hit everyone who eats the food.”

Stating that the symptoms of mushroom poisoning can appear after 2 to 6 hours, Dr. Sarıkaya said, “Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea, fever, increased pulse, abdominal pain, and then liver and kidney disorders and symptoms related to disorders of these organs.”

Emphasizing that poisonous mushrooms can cause death, Dr. Sarıkaya said, “After the symptoms of poisoning are noticed, the nearest health institution should be consulted. Information about poisoning can be obtained from the National Poison Advisory Center number 114. It should not be forgotten that mushroom poisoning is dangerous and can be fatal or leave irreversible damage to our body depending on the toxic dose taken, the time taken for absorption and other personal factors.”
