Beware of prolonged diarrhea in children

“Diarrhea is defined as more than three watery stools in 24 hours or more frequent and watery stools than usual in infants who are exclusively breastfed. In addition to diarrhea, fever, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and weakness can be seen in patients. It can be caused by swallowing pool or sea water, drinking contaminated water, consuming foods washed with contaminated water, and consuming openly sold or spoiled foods. Summer diarrhea in children lasts for 3 to 7 days. Children who constantly vomit, cannot feed, have bloody diarrhea and have signs of dehydration should definitely consult a doctor. So what are the symptoms of dehydration in children? Dry mouth and lips, tendency to sleep, sunken eyeballs, acceleration in pulse rate and decrease in the amount of urine. The most important step in the treatment of diarrhea is to replace the patient's fluid and electrolyte loss. If the child with diarrhea is breastfeeding, breastfeeding should be continued. Fatty foods and packaged foods should not be consumed during this period. Potatoes, bananas, rice porridge and yogurt are among the foods that are good for diarrhea. The use of probiotics that shorten the duration of diarrhea is also recommended.”

Viruses are the most common cause of diarrhea, which is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in children. The most important cause among viruses is rotaviruses. Therefore, rotavirus vaccination is another option for prevention. For this disease, which is transmitted by fecal-oral route, it is recommended not to contact with sick individuals and not to go to kindergartens or schools when sick.”
