Bloating after a meal may be a sign of illness

Answering the curious questions about postprandial swelling, Op. Dr. Erdem Şentatar stated that abdominal swelling is a disturbing condition that many people frequently encounter today. Şentatar said, “This swelling, which occurs especially after a meal, is sometimes not only a simple discomfort, but can also be a harbinger of some health problems. Understanding the causes of postprandial abdominal distension offers important clues on how to prevent this uncomfortable condition.”

Op. Dr. Erdem Şentatar, one of the General Surgery doctors at BHT CLINIC Istanbul Tema Hospital, said, “Postprandial abdominal distension may occur due to gas or fluid accumulation in the digestive system, including the esophagus, stomach and intestines. This swelling in the abdomen can reduce the quality of life, make it difficult for the person to move comfortably and negatively affect their social life. It is important to know the underlying causes of bloating and to take precautions in order to lead a more comfortable life.”

“The factors that cause postprandial abdominal distension are varied”

Op. Dr. Erdem Şentatar explained some of the most common causes of postprandial swelling as follows:

“When we eat fast, we usually swallow air along with the food. This air can enter the digestive tract and cause gas accumulation, resulting in bloating. Eating slowly and chewing food thoroughly can be effective in reducing this. Food choice is also an important factor; carbohydrate-heavy, fibrous or gas-forming foods (e.g. legumes, broccoli, onions) can increase gas formation during digestion and cause bloating. In people with intolerance to dairy products, foods containing lactose can cause abdominal bloating. Digestive system disorders can also cause bloating. Conditions such as reflux, gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or food intolerances can disrupt the normal functioning of the intestines, causing gas accumulation, bloating and indigestion. IBS in particular causes irregular bowel movements, which can lead to abdominal bloating and pain after meals. Stress and anxiety can also affect the digestive system, causing digestion to slow down or work irregularly. This leads to food staying in the intestine longer and gas accumulation. Reducing stress levels during meals can alleviate bloating. Finally, insufficient water consumption can also cause postprandial bloating. Not drinking enough water can cause bloating by slowing digestion and decreasing bowel movements.”

“Diagnosis is made by taking into account additional complaints and duration of bloating”

Şentatar said, “The general health status of the patient, additional complaints and the duration of the bloating complaint are taken into consideration. Blood tests, stool examinations, imaging examinations (ultrasound, tomography, endoscopies), allergy and intolerance tests and functional tests (gastric emptying tests) should be performed according to the patient's condition.”

“Postprandial abdominal distension is often preventable”

Stating that this problem can be alleviated with simple measures such as eating slowly, avoiding gas-forming foods, staying away from stress and consuming enough water, General Surgery Doctor Erdem Şentatar suggested that individuals who experience constant and severe abdominal bloating should definitely consult a specialist to find out if there is a serious underlying health problem. Şentatar said, “You can get rid of this discomfort by taking steps towards proper nutrition, adequate water consumption and digestive health under the guidance of a specialist when necessary. Remember that a healthy digestive system directly affects your quality of life.”
