SANKO University Faculty of Medicine, General Surgery Department Head Prof. Dr. Göktürk Maralcan said that early diagnosis of breast cancer increases the chance of success in treatment.
Prof. Dr. Göktürk Maralcan made a statement due to October 1-31 Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Drawing attention to the importance of diagnosis, treatment and post-treatment follow-up in breast cancer, Prof. Dr. Maralcan said, “All of these stages are individually important for success. It is necessary to manage the processes correctly.”
Reminding that breast cancer surgeries are very diverse, Prof. Dr. Maralcan gave the following information about breast cancer surgeries: “Surgical treatment is the main treatment method for breast cancer. The breast surgeon evaluates the patient in every aspect and makes a decision. Since the disease progresses differently in each patient, the surgical treatment applied is also different. The breast and axillary lymph nodes are treated. It removes the starting point of the cancer. The extent of the surgery varies in each patient depending on the condition of the disease. Although rare, surgery can have risks, but with an experienced and successful team, these risks are minimized. In the surgical treatment of breast cancer; There are various surgeries such as breast-conserving surgeries, surgeries in which the breast is removed and the breast skin is preserved and the breast is created in the same session, and surgery in which the armpit lymph nodes are removed along with the breast.”
Stating that a successful outcome is possible with a center where an experienced and successful team comes together, Prof. Dr. Maralcan continued as follows: “The experienced center includes a breast surgeon, medical oncologist, radiologist, pathologist, nuclear medicine specialist, physiotherapist, psychologist, dietician and many other elements. In such a center, there is also a so-called “breast council”. In this council, all breast cancer patients are evaluated once a week, their treatment, surgeries, radiation treatments, follow-ups, in other words, all details are discussed and decided. Treatment plans of the patients are made. Thus, patients have the chance to be treated and followed up by an experienced multidisciplinary team in the light of up-to-date information. During breast cancer awareness month, we, as a highly aware center, draw attention to breast cancer and continue to be with our patients in their struggle. We are with you as a team in your fight against cancer.”
