A Breast Cancer Awareness Symposium was organized with the slogan “Early Diagnosis Saves Lives” in cooperation with Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences Nursing Department and Muğla Training and Research Hospital. Health professionals, academicians and citizens showed great interest in the symposium held at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University Atatürk Cultural Center.
The opening speeches of the symposium were delivered by Prof. Dr. Media Subaşı Baybuğa, Head of Nursing Department of MSKU Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. Ömer Gider, Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. Turhan Togan, Chief Physician of Muğla Training and Research Hospital, and Özlem Palancıoğlu, Director of Health Care Services. In the speeches, the vital importance of early diagnosis in breast cancer was emphasized and the importance of awareness raising activities was mentioned.
The symposium was held in two sessions. The first session was chaired by Associate Professor Leyla Tekin from the Department of Pathology and Associate Professor Gülşah Köse from the Department of Nursing. In this session, Dr. Lecturer from the Department of Family Medicine Prof. Dr. Gülçin Özkan Onur from the Department of Family Medicine, “Breast Cancer Etiology, Risk Factors”, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Funda Dinç from the Department of Radiology, “Early Diagnosis and Radiological Evaluation in Breast Cancer”, Dr. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cenk Yazkan from the Department of General Surgery made informative presentations on “Surgical Treatment in Breast Cancer”.
The second session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Media Subaşı Baybuğa, Head of the Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences and Prof. Dr. Özgür Tanrıverdi, Head of the Department of Medical Oncology. In this session, Prof. Dr. Özgür Tanrıverdi presented “Oncological Treatment of Breast Cancer”, Radiation Oncology Specialist Dr. Sadık Özöner presented “Radiotherapy in Breast Cancer”, Head of the Department of Psychiatric Nursing, Department of Nursing Prof. Dr. Nezihe Bulut Uğurlu presented “Psycho-social Aspects of Breast Cancer” and Assistant Prof. Dr. Zeliha Seki presented “Psycho-social Aspects of Breast Cancer”. Prof. Dr. Zeliha Seki made presentations on “Nursing Care After Breast Cancer and Problems Affecting Quality of Life”.
At the end of the symposium, which was intensively attended, discussions were held on the questions-answers and suggestions from the participants. The symposium ended by underlining once again the importance of such activities for raising breast cancer awareness.
