Breast cancer can also occur in men

General Surgery Specialist Dr. Faculty Member Özlem Karaca Ocak pointed out that breast cancer can also be seen in men and stated that early diagnosis and intervention offer a successful treatment chance.

Breast cancer is caused by the uncontrolled proliferation of cells in the breast. Catching breast cancer as early as possible offers a chance for successful treatment. Pointing out that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women, Dr. Faculty Member Özlem Karaca Ocak, one of the doctors of Medicana Health Group, gave information within the scope of “October Breast Cancer Awareness Month”.

“Breast cancer can also be seen in men”

Stating that they have carried out various activities to raise awareness about breast cancer, Medicana International Samsun Hospital General Surgery Specialist Dr. Faculty Member Özlem Karaca Ocak said, “Breast cancer occurs as a result of cells becoming cancerous (unlimited and uncontrolled proliferation and growth). Almost all breast cancer occurs in women. However, breast cancer can also occur in men. The ratio of women to men in this type of cancer is 1 in 10. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women in our country and in the world and is also the most common cause of death.”

“Inactivity, obesity, late childbirth and changing lifestyle trigger breast cancer”

Giving information about the factors that trigger cancer, Dr. Faculty Member Ocak said, “As with all cancer rates in the world and in Turkey, there is an increase in the incidence of breast cancer, but death rates from breast cancer are gradually decreasing. Mortality rates are decreasing due to early diagnosis, development of surgical methods and increased awareness. Inactivity, obesity, giving birth at a late age and rapidly changing lifestyle are among the factors that trigger breast cancer. It is necessary to pay attention to these symptoms in the nipple, including shrinkage in the breast, thickening of the skin, swelling, irritation or deterioration of the skin, and sensitization or inverting of the nipple.”

Noting that examinations are very important in preventing breast cancer, Ocak also said the following:

“Recognizing the symptoms of breast cancer is very important to prevent the progression of breast cancer. For this reason, it is necessary to recognize one's own breast structure and know the risk factors. Diagnosing breast cancer at an early stage increases the chances of successful treatment and survival. For this reason, it is vital for women to perform breast self-examination after the age of 20 and to undergo breast examination and necessary examinations by a doctor once a year.”
