While breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women in the world and in our country, according to statistics, 1 out of every 8 women gets breast cancer. Emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis in breast cancer, General Surgery Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Okuş pointed out that breast cancer screening should not be interrupted in order not to succumb to breast cancer.

“The screening age varies according to the patient's history”
Stating that seeing a physician without any discomfort or complaint is called health screening and that not all cancers are screened, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Okuş said, “You do not need to have any complaints to be screened. The purpose of screening is to diagnose the disease at an early stage and to reduce the mortality rate due to the disease. Everyone who has a breast organ has the possibility of developing breast cancer. If breast cancer is caught at an early stage, patients will be able to fight cancer in a better way.”
Stating that diagnosis and screening methods are very important for early detection and easy treatment of breast cancer and determining the treatment path, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Okuş said that the age of screening may vary from person to person, “Starting from the age of 25, the person should examine herself/himself. Physician control can be started at the age of 30. Between the ages of 30 and 40, there should be a physician control at intervals of 2-3 years. In the physician control, the breast is examined and imaging examination is requested if deemed necessary. After the age of 40, annual screening is requested. Because the incidence of breast tumors increases with age. If the tumor is detected at an early stage, the patient has a better chance of survival.”
“First of all, you should be your own doctor”
Stating that breast cancer is more common in women in their 30s, 40s and 50s, and that the average age of breast cancer is in their 20s, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Okuş said, “If the mother or aunt has a history of breast cancer, the age of breast cancer screening varies according to the age at which the mother was diagnosed. In general, screening starts 10 years before the youngest breast cancer case in the family. For example, if the aunt had breast cancer at the age of 40, it is recommended that the person be screened for breast cancer at the age of 30. In such cases, it is necessary to go beyond classical screening to minimize the risk. Breast screening is personalized.”
