Cardiologist explained: “Diets do not cause sudden heart attack”

The effect of diets on heart health has become one of the most curious topics of recent days. Cardiology Specialist Dr. Zeki Doğan said that while objectionable diets negatively affect not only the heart but the whole body, they will not cause sudden heart attacks. Dr. Doğan stated that weight loss injections are beneficial for heart health.

Some diets such as ketogenic diet, water diet, shock diet and intermittent fasting, which are applied to lose weight fast, have become a topic of discussion. While experts warn against such diets, Cardiology Specialist from Atlas University, Dr. Lecturer. Prof. Dr. Zeki Doğan touched on important points regarding the effect of diets on heart health.

Avoid monotonous diets

Stating that monotonous diets are unfavorable not only for the heart but also for body health, Doğan used the following expressions:

“Intermittent fasting, ketogenic diets, water diets or shock diets, which fall into the group we call monotonous diets, are generally in the same category. People who eat a protein-heavy diet on a ketogenic diet may have drawbacks due to excess protein this time. For example, gallstones may form in the gallbladder, uric acid increases, and gout occurs. Gout is already one of the cardiovascular risk factors. In this case, it can also bring the risk of heart attack. Diets should be moderate and integrated with sports. Rather than losing weight very quickly and losing your health, we prefer to lose weight slowly and follow a calmer, more acceptable diet from a cardiological point of view.”

“Heart muscles do not weaken with diet”

Stating that there is a common thought that the heart muscle weakens as a result of dieting, Dr. Faculty Member Zeki Doğan said, “There is no such thing as weakening of the heart muscle with diets. There is a perception that with diets such as diets, water diets or shock diets, muscles are lost in addition to fats, and since the heart is made up of muscle, it also weakens. This is not the case. The heart muscle is the last organ to be affected. A heart attack is a process caused by damage accumulated over the years. A heart attack has a precursor, it does not happen all at once. As a result of the accumulation of factors such as cholesterol, smoking, hypertension, diabetes and stress over months and years, plaque forms in the heart vessel. A heart attack occurs as a result of the stenosis in the vessel filling up completely with any triggering factor. The comfort of showing something that occurs over time as if it suddenly happened in a short period of time is not the right approach.”

“Wrong diet can disrupt heart rhythm”

Reminding that diets must be physiological, Dr. Doğan said, “Sports must be done together with the diet. We should eat everything, but we should eat little by little. It would be better to stay away from carbohydrates, sugar, pastries and fried foods. Protein, vegetables and fruits should be on the diet list. We are against diets that completely ignore these foods. These types of diets have no health benefits. It is very clear that all of these are harmful to health. If you eat bad diets for a long time, you may have electrolyte imbalance. Electrolyte imbalance can be a trigger for heart rhythm disorders.”

“Weight loss injections should be used with the advice of a doctor”

Giving important information about weight loss injections and medications, Dr. Doğan said, “We use FDA (United States Food and Drug Administration) and Ministry of Health approved weight loss injections in our patients. These drugs have positive properties such as reducing death from heart attack and reducing the risk of developing heart diseases. We have no doubts about them. Their use should be under the supervision and advice of a doctor. It is never acceptable for a person to obtain it from somewhere and apply a dose that comes to mind to himself.”

Emphasizing the importance of fighting obesity, especially for heart health, Dr. Zeki Doğan said that this situation should not be turned into a field of abuse and warned to stay away from objectionable diets.
