Cardiologist warned: “Beware of sudden cardiac death and heart attack risk”

Stating that the most common cause of sudden cardiac death is undiagnosed cardiovascular diseases, Cardiology Specialist Dr. Mustafa Yaşan said, “While the main cause in children is congenital heart diseases, the most common cause in adults is coronary artery disease. The key point in sudden cardiac death is that the event causes shock and trauma in the environment due to the sudden and unexpectedness of death.”

Cardiology Specialist from VM Medical Park Samsun Hospital, Uzm. Dr. Mustafa Yaşan gave information about sudden cardiac death and heart attack. Stating that sudden cardiac death is defined as natural death due to cardiac causes manifested by sudden loss of consciousness within one hour after the onset of symptoms, Uzm. Dr. Mustafa Yaşan said, “The key point in sudden cardiac death is that the event causes shock and trauma in the environment due to the sudden and unexpectedness of death. In the US, 300 thousand people die annually, while in Turkey, approximately 70 thousand people die annually and 190 people die daily due to sudden cardiac death.”

“The most common cause is undiagnosed cardiovascular diseases”

Stating that the most common cause of sudden cardiac death is undiagnosed cardiovascular diseases, Dr. Yaşan said, “While the main cause in children is congenital heart diseases, the most common cause in adults is coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease occurs as a result of narrowing of the vessels feeding the heart due to inflammatory fat droplets called atherosclerosis. The sudden rupture of these inflammatory fatty plaques at an unpredictable time and the formation of a clot in the blood vessel causes a heart attack. Heart attack is the main cause of sudden cardiac death.”

“Chest pain is usually the first symptom”

Stating that the first symptom usually felt during a heart attack is chest pain, Uzm. Prof. Dr. Yaşan said, “Chest pain is a compressive or pressing pain under the faith board, often accompanied by sweating. It lasts longer than 10 minutes and can radiate to both arms, abdomen and jaw, and may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting and shortness of breath.”

“It should be urgently consulted to a health institution”

Pointing out that the most important thing a patient with a heart attack should do is to apply to a health institution urgently, Uzm. Dr. Yaşan said the following:

“Early hospitalization significantly reduces both the risk of death and permanent damage to the heart. The risk of heart attack increases in cases of high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, and having a family member who had a heart attack at an early age. For this reason, high cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes should be treated effectively under the supervision of a physician. Regular medical check-ups are very important. Another important risk factor is smoking. Smoking must be quit. Regular fast-paced walking and not gaining excess weight are other important protective factors.”

“Do Covid vaccines have an effect?”

Dr. Yaşan concluded his statement as follows:

“In a recently published study comparing approximately 10 million vaccinated and unvaccinated people who were not related to pharmaceutical companies, it was found that people who were vaccinated had less heart disease in the short and long term. In addition to early delivery of the patient to the hospital to prevent sudden cardiac death, it is very important to perform CPR to maintain blood flow to vital organs, especially the brain, until reaching the hospital. For this reason, it is vital to have CPR, first aid trainings and cardiac shock devices in places where people are crowded.”
