Cardiologist “We felt an increase in heart attack rates after Covid-19 vaccinations”
Cardiology Specialist Prof. Dr. Uğur Arslan said, “We felt an increase in heart attack rates after the Covid-19 vaccines. However, this is actually expected. We should not blame the vaccines directly. Because vaccines mimic the disease in some way, they can increase this risk, even if only slightly, so that it touches people more lightly.”
Making statements on the effects of vaccines on the risk of heart attack, Prof. Dr. Uğur Arslan from the Cardiology Clinic of Medicana International Samsun Hospital said, “We felt a slight increase in heart attack incidents after the Covid-19 outbreak. However, this is actually expected. We should not directly blame vaccines. Because vaccines mimic the disease in some way, they can increase this risk, albeit to a certain extent, so that it touches people more lightly. You can also think of Covid as a flu. Now the new generation of flu is a little more severe. Since these viral diseases already initiate the inflammatory process in general, they can also increase risks such as heart attack, coronary artery disease and stroke. Vaccines are also included in these. It increases slightly, but in general, we can say that if the person had Covid for a heart attack, he would have a higher risk.”
The effects of hot weather on heart patients
Underlining that hot weather and direct exposure to sunlight can invite some health problems, Prof. Dr. Uğur Arslan, one of the doctors of Medicana Health Group, said: “There is not much benefit in standing under the sun at noon when the heat is too much and the sun is right at the top. They do this to synthesize vitamin D. As Turkey, we actually live in a very beautiful geography. We can see the sun all year round. If we go outside at certain intervals, we can already synthesize enough vitamin D. Otherwise, going and standing under the sun in very hot weather increases the risk especially in terms of skin cancer. Therefore, it is not a very correct statement to say 'go out in very hot weather, stand under the sun, you will synthesize more vitamin D'.”
Pointing out that the possibility of having an attack increases due to the acceleration of the heart rhythm, Prof. Dr. Uğur Arslan said, “Temperatures can have effects on heart patients. Patients come to us with a decrease in blood pressure in this heat. The heat causes dehydration, especially because it causes more water to be excreted from the body. In other words, it causes water deficiency in the body. As a result, people's blood pressure may drop. We face the risk of hypotension in blood pressure patients. Heart failure patients may develop rhythm disorders during these months. As a result of the increase in heart rate due to dehydration, this hot weather may also increase the risk of heart attack to some extent. It is actually important not to go out in the heat as much as possible to protect heart health. It is especially important for them to use their own medications routinely and to consult their doctors if they have any problems. Especially doing sports is something we recommend for heart patients. We say to take a brisk walk for at least half an hour a day, but we recommend that they do not go out in the heat, that is, at noon or in very hot weather, we recommend that they do it early in the morning and after dark in the evening.”
