While the use of air conditioners is increasing in our country, where the climate crisis and desert weather have become well established, families are wondering whether the use of air conditioners in the room where the baby sleeps is harmful. Medicana Health Group Pediatrics Specialist Dr. Özge Yendur said that air conditioning can be used if appropriate conditions are provided.
Especially in cities where high temperatures are combined with humidity, families with babies are also concerned about the use of air conditioners. Medicana International Izmir Hospital Pediatrics Specialist Dr. Özge Yendur said, “It is not harmful to use air conditioning in rooms with babies, provided that there are appropriate usage conditions. The use of air conditioning at an average of 24 degrees and 45-65 humidity range is suitable for rooms with babies.”
Ventilation is important
Pointing out that standard maintenance of the air conditioner should be done and direct air flow should not be given directly to the baby, Dr. Yendur said, “The temperature up to 26 degrees is a suitable temperature for an air-conditioned room. However, one of the issues to be considered here is humidity. When the humidity range of 45-65% is not observed, the temperature felt in dry air decreases and the possibility of the baby getting cold increases. With the appropriate temperature and humidity and a room ventilated every 2-3 hours, you can ensure that the baby has a comfortable sleep. Fresh air circulation plays an important role in preventing respiratory diseases. Balancing the humidity level by using humidifiers or water containers can reduce this risk.”
26-27 degrees suitable for babies with anemia
Dr. Özge Yendur mentioned that the frequency of mild anemia is generally high in our country and said, “An air conditioner set to 26-27 degrees Celsius may be even more suitable for babies, especially in infants with anemia, because babies may be uncomfortable at lower temperatures than adults. Air conditioners blowing air directly on the baby can quickly lower the baby's body temperature and increase the risk of hypothermia. In addition, direct airflow can cause dryness and irritation on babies' delicate skin. In case of continuous operation at night, the child can be covered with a thin pique-style cover.”
Yendur emphasized the importance of not neglecting regular maintenance as recommended by the manufacturers in accordance with the instructions for use of air conditioners and gave the following information: “Cleaning the air filters prevents the spread of allergens and microorganisms. Research shows that regularly maintained air conditioners are especially effective in preventing respiratory diseases such as asthma and allergies. By following these steps, you can ensure the safe and healthy use of air conditioners in a room where small children are present. When used correctly, air conditioners provide great comfort for our little ones and families on hot summer days and create a healthy indoor environment.”
