Changing lifestyle prevents diabetes

Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases and Internal Medicine Specialist Prof. Dr. Sinem Kıyıcı stated that weight loss, healthy nutrition and active lifestyle should be adopted to prevent diabetes. A citizen in Bursa, who was at risk of diabetes due to his excess weight, was able to lose 20 kilograms in 7 months and control his blood sugar at the Yıldırım Healthy Life Center, where he applied following the advice of a physician.

Prof. Dr. Sinem Kıyıcı, Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases and Internal Medicine Specialist at Bursa High Specialization Training and Research Hospital, stated that diabetes is a disease of metabolism in her statement within the framework of World Diabetes Day. Underlining that if it is not treated effectively, it can cause serious health problems, reduced quality of life and even premature death, Prof. Dr. Kıyıcı said, “It is a common disease all over the world. We know that one out of every 10 adults in the world has diabetes. According to the data of the International Diabetes Federation, 537 million individuals with diabetes will live in 2021. In Europe, Turkey is one of the leading countries in terms of diabetes prevalence. According to a study conducted in 2010, 13.7 percent of our country has diabetes.”

Emphasizing that diabetes has symptoms such as dry mouth, excessive thirst, frequent hunger, frequent urination, nighttime urination, weight loss despite eating a lot of food, Prof. Dr. Kıyıcı said, “If these symptoms are present, we strongly recommend that individuals consult a physician. Early diagnosis is very important in terms of preventing organ damage due to diabetes. Diabetes can cause damage to many organs and systems. Problems such as cardiovascular diseases, stroke, kidney diseases, eye damage, vision loss, foot wounds, limb loss due to gangrene. Especially weight loss, healthy nutrition and active life are important steps to be taken in terms of preventing diabetes.”


Lost weight and protected from diabetes risk

On the other hand, 46-year-old Zuhal Sencan, who lives in Bursa, was found to have high blood sugar levels 7 months ago. Sencan, who wanted to change her lifestyle instead of medication, was referred to the Healthy Life Center of Yıldırım District Health Directorate by her physician. Sencan, who applied with her tests, managed to reduce her blood sugar level from 7.3 to 6.1 by losing 20 kilograms at the end of 7 months with the right nutrition program. Sencan, who is happy to both lose weight and prevent diabetes, said, “I was also happy when I saw that I could do all kinds of activities. Those around me were very surprised to see this change in me. I am still continuing to lose weight. I will lower my sugar even more,” he said.

Rabia Tuğçe Etik, Dietician at Yıldırım Healthy Life Center, who advised Sencan during the weight loss process, said, “Healthy nutrition and physical activity are important in preventing diabetes or reducing complications.
