Ömür Çiftçi, Child Development Specialist and Family Counselor from Medipol Health Group, warned parents shortly before the opening of schools. Stating that the attitudes of parents trigger behavioral disorders in children, Çiftçi said, “During this process, we should go to school with our children and tell the child about school. We should use the expression 'I will pick you up from school and I will be at home' and instill that confidence in our children.”
It is very close to the opening of schools and the first bell rings for millions of students. Ömür Çiftçi, Child Development Specialist and Family Counselor from Medipol Health Group, drew attention to the behavioral disorders that may occur in children who will start school and gave advice to parents. Stating that children are transitioning to a new era, Çiftçi said, “Before and after school, our children can be both excited and anxious. Managing their excitement and anxiety is of great importance.”
“We should tell children what school is”
Underlining that the orientation process also starts in schools during this period, Çiftçi said, “There is an acclimatization period in schools for about a week. During this period, we should go to school with our children and explain to them what school is and what is done at school. Certain stationery purchases are also made during the school process. My suggestion to our parents is that our children shop for stationery and clothes together.”
Set your routines
Stating that children have come out of the 3-month vacation period, Çiftçi said, “During this period, children did not have a certain order from sleeping time to waking up time. As of the school term, certain routines are re-entering their lives. We should organize this within a week. You should do breakfast routines together. We can remind them of their book reading habits again.”
Establish bonds of trust with your child
Stating that children may also experience anxiety after starting school, Çiftçi said: “We should remind our children that school is a safe environment, that they may experience some emotional difficulties, but that school is also a home environment. We should use the phrase 'I will pick you up from school and I will be at home' and instill that confidence in our children. We need to enter a very determined process here. Our children leave their families, especially their mothers, and start school. It is also wrong to use expressions like 'No, you have to go to school, you have to start' or to turn our backs. We need to establish secure bonds and take decisive steps. We should also give this message to our children in a healthy way.”
