“Chocolate cysts require a customized approach”

Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist Dr. Erkan Yasdıman said that the treatment of chocolate cyst requires a customized approach for each patient.

Saying that endometriosis, known as 'chocolate cyst' in the society, is a type of cyst that occurs in the ovaries of women, Medline Adana Hospital Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist Dr. Erkan Yasdıman said, “This disease can even lead to infertility by affecting reproductive functions over time. Therefore, regular follow-up and correct treatment are important.”

Symptoms should be taken into consideration

Dr. Erkan Yasdıman said that in some women, the endometrium, the tissue lining the inner surface of the uterus, is located outside the uterus, “Chocolate cysts are formed as a result of the accumulation of this tissue in organs such as the ovaries. The disease is closely related to genetic predisposition, early menstrual age, pain during sexual intercourse, abdominal pain and painful menstrual cycles. The age of the patient, the severity of the symptoms and the size of the cyst are important in the treatment of the problem.”

Early diagnosis is important

Noting that women who are at risk should consult a specialist doctor, especially if they encounter problems such as severe menstrual pains or inability to have children despite regular and unprotected sexual intercourse for a year, Dr. Yasdıman said, “Early diagnosis of this disease makes it easier to start treatment and prevent problems that may develop in the future.”

Treatment options are changing

Noting that the treatment of chocolate cysts requires a customized approach for each patient, Yasdıman said, “Treatment usually includes two main options: drug therapy and surgical intervention. In drug treatment, painkillers and hormone therapies are aimed at alleviating the symptoms of the disease. Apart from this, surgical intervention may be required depending on the size of the cyst or the severity of the symptoms. Laparoscopic (closed) surgery to protect the ovaries is the most preferred method.”

Risk can be reduced with precautions

“Although there is no definitive measure to prevent chocolate cysts, some steps can help reduce the risk of developing the disease,” said Dr. Yasdıman and made the following suggestions:

“Use birth control. Birth control pills or other hormonal methods (implants, injections, vaginal rings) can help regulate the menstrual cycle and prevent excessive menstrual bleeding.

Menstrual cycle control. Controlling irregular menstrual cycles can reduce the risk of chocolate cysts. Birth control pills or other hormone treatments can be helpful to maintain this regularity.

Early diagnosis and monitoring: Severe and persistent menstrual cramps are the main indication of a chocolate cyst. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent the disease from progressing. In addition, women with infertility problems should be evaluated for chocolate cysts. Early intervention allows for treatment and can prevent the infertility problem from getting worse. Do not postpone having children. Since chocolate cyst is a progressive and recurrent disease, especially women over the age of 30 should not postpone having children if they want to have children. Because when the disease progresses to advanced stages, the chance of pregnancy decreases. In addition, the disease regresses during pregnancy. Monitoring high-risk situations. Women with a family history of chocolate cysts may be at higher risk of developing the disease. These women can intervene early with regular gynecological check-ups and symptom monitoring. Healthy diet and nutrition. Chocolate cysts increase the risk of infection, especially in the abdominal cavity. Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants can help the body fight inflammation. Avoiding high-sugar and processed carbohydrates can also help regulate blood sugar, reducing the risk of inflammation. Physical activity and exercise. Exercise can reduce inflammation in the body and help balance hormone levels. Regular exercise can alleviate the disease and improve overall health. Strengthening the immune system. A weakened immune system can open the door to the development of chocolate cysts. Vitamin D intake, probiotics, stress management and adequate sleep can help strengthen the immune system.”
