Cold water should be drunk sip by sip, not gulp by gulp

Increasing fluid loss in the scorching heat of the summer months creates the need for abundant water consumption. Experts warn that cold water should be drunk sip by sip, not gulp by gulp.

Experts recommend consuming 2-2.5 liters of cold water a day to prevent fluid loss in increasing temperatures. Drinking cold water during exercise makes the training more efficient. Stating that cold water has benefits as well as harms, experts warn against drinking cold water if there is an acute, chronic or seasonal illness.

“We need to take care to drink it sip by sip, not gulp by gulp”

Stating that cold water consumption increases considerably during the hot summer months, Medicana Konya Hospital Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Dyt. Merve Sena Nazlı said, “This can become a habit in some people and continue in the winter period. When we look at the benefits of cold water, especially during exercise, cold water consumption helps the training to be more efficient. This is due to the normalization of the body temperature that increases in training and at the same time, since a lot of fluid is lost during exercise, we recommend cold water consumption at the point of replacing these fluids quickly. But what we need to pay attention to here is that we need to take care to drink sip by sip, not gulp by gulp.”

“Let's especially pay attention to drinking 2-2.5 liters of water”

Explaining the harms of cold water, Dietitian Merve Sena Nazlı said, “When we look at the harms, especially in a study conducted in 2001, it was observed that people with migraine increased migraine attacks. At the same time, it can increase sensitivity and cause pain in people with gum diseases. Cold water consumption can also cause some pain and cramps in people with gastrointestinal problems. Therefore, care should be taken. There are not many scientific studies on the harms of cold water. In the studies that are available, we can talk about the harms in people with more acute or chronic diseases. If you do not have an acute, chronic or seasonal disease, you can prefer cold water especially during exercise and in hot weather. The important thing here is to pay attention to the amount of water we drink daily rather than the temperature of the water. Let's especially pay attention to drinking 2-2.5 liters of water,” she said.

“Since children are very active, there is a loss of fluid with a lot of sweating”

Stating that water consumption should be increased a little more in people who use medication, Dietitian Merve Sena Nazlı said, “Because children are very active in terms of relaxing the kidneys and liver, there is a lot of fluid loss with sweating. Let's pay attention to water consumption in them, but if there is a situation such as sore throat, cold water can cause sore throat because it causes a little more irritation. In them, in the form of normal warm water, but if there is no situation, cold consumption in hot weather will not cause any harm," she said.

Some citizens stated that they drink about 1 liter of water a day, while others stated that they drink it at rest. Some children, on the other hand, stated that they drink between 1.5-2.5 liters of water a day and said, “Water is health.”
