The expert warned, the feeling of coldness in the fingers, which is mistaken for anemia, may be a harbinger of Reyno syndrome, which causes loss of limbs.
Sivas Numune Hospital Cardiovascular Surgeon Specialist Dr. Müslim Gül gave information about Reyno syndrome, which is not well known among the public and is confused with anemia. Stating that the discomfort occurs with a feeling of coldness in the fingers, Gül said, “The feeling of coldness and numbness in the fingers is generally mistaken for anemia. This disease is a disease that is associated with rheumatologic diseases and special rheumatic diseases involving subcutaneous tissues. Smoking is also one of the factors that trigger this disease. In cold weather, it is first seen as pallor, then bruising and then redness due to the inability to bring blood to the fingers as a result of the small capillaries and arteries that feed the fingers being exposed to cold. This disease is caused by a problem in the contraction, contraction and relaxation of small arteries. It should not be confused with anemia. Fingertips are usually the least bloody parts of the body. Fingers and toes are the farthest points from the heart, so they are usually cold. Unfortunately, although we live in a cold country like Sivas, if we do not have the habit of wearing gloves or thick socks, the already cold fingertips are less cold and symptoms begin. In much more severe cases, the tip of the nose and auricles are also affected.”
May cause finger loss
Cardiovascular Surgeon Specialist Dr. Müslim Gül emphasized that Reyno syndrome can cause finger loss and can be a symptom of many dangerous diseases and said, “It is definitely not a disease to be taken lightly. Reyno syndrome can also be a symptom of other diseases. For example, the person may have cancer, it may be due to the medications he/she uses. It may be a side effect of leprosy, rheumatism, severe disease groups. Reyno's disease is divided into two. If it is an effect reflected on the fingers as a result of such diseases, we call it secondary reyno, and if it is due to the contraction of the arteries, we call it primary reyno. Therefore, the person must first be investigated. If primary rhino is detected, it is necessary to give a treatment for it. If not, the fingertips will become gangrenous in the future and lead to the loss of our fingers and hands.”
No treatment
Stating that Reyno syndrome can be considered an occupational disease and emphasizing that there is no treatment, Gül said. “This disease is also an occupational disease. There is no cure for this disease in the world. We can only improve its symptoms. It is not in a disease group where we can say that there is a clear medicine and treatment. It can be thought of as eczema. It is a group of diseases that flare up in a certain period and are extinguished with various medications, but recur again. For this reason, people should protect themselves from the cold as much as possible and should not smoke.”
