Colon cancer has started to be seen in 20s

While the danger of colon cancer, which is among the most common cancers seen in our country, is increasing day by day, Internal Diseases Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hilmi Erdem Sümbül said, “We started to see colon cancer even in our 20s. It is a very insidious disease.”

Every year, 2 million people in the world and 20 thousand people in our country are diagnosed with cancer. Moreover, the incidence has been increasing in recent years in people under the age of 50 due to the increasing prevalence of faulty eating habits and obesity. Colon cancer can be prevented with regular colonoscopy screening.


“It is more common in men”

Internal Medicine Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hilmi Erdem Sümbül, who works at Adana City Training and Research Hospital, spoke to İhlas News Agency on the subject. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sümbül stated that the frequency of death due to colon cancer ranks 3rd in our country and said, “An individual has a 4 percent risk of having colon cancer throughout his entire life. This is 25 percent higher in men. The frequency of colon cancer has recently started to increase with the increase in obesity and deterioration of the diet. We have reduced the colon cancer screening programs that we started from the age of 50 to the age of 45.”

“It is seen in the 20s”

Explaining that colon cancer is an insidious disease, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sümbül said, “Colon cancer is a disease that can really be treated when it is recognized early. We benefit from chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Disruption of eating habits is a risk factor. Especially avoiding fibrous foods and increasing consumption of processed foods have increased the cases. We started to see colon cancer even in the 20s. It is a very insidious disease. As soon as the symptoms are seen, you should immediately apply to the hospital.”
