Critical warning against mushroom poisoning: “Poisoning can result in death”

Due to the abundance of mushrooms, mushroom poisoning has also increased due to the mushrooms collected by citizens in the forests. Filiz Bolu said that mushroom poisoning is a condition that occurs as a result of consuming mushrooms that grow in natural areas and have poisonous substances in their structure.

Stating that poisoning can result in death, Uzm. Dr. Bolu said, “The severity of poisoning varies according to the type of mushroom, the toxin it contains and the amount consumed. Symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, low blood pressure, blurred vision, flushing of the face and neck, metallic taste in the mouth, fever, palpitations, abdominal pain are observed within the first 24 hours after mushroom consumption. As a result of mushroom poisoning, the nervous system, liver and kidney functions can be affected and poisoning can result in death.”
“Pay attention to the presence of labels”
Stating that the most important way to prevent mushroom poisoning is not to consume mushrooms that grow in nature, Uzm. Dr. Filiz Bolu said, “Cultivated mushrooms can be preferred instead. When buying cultivated mushrooms, packaged ones should be preferred and attention should be paid to whether there are labels informing the consumer on the packaging. It should not be forgotten that the environments where even cultivated mushrooms grow may contain some microorganisms and that stomach and intestinal complaints may develop by consuming mushrooms contaminated with microorganisms. If mushrooms grown in nature are eaten, the nearest health institution should be consulted immediately when symptoms of poisoning appear. While the person is applying to the hospital, taking some of the mushrooms eaten, if any, will inform the physician about the toxin,” he said.
