Every year, September 13 is commemorated as World Sepsis Day all over the world. Millions of people are caught in this insidious and rapidly progressing condition every year and unfortunately, many people die without realizing this danger. Biruni University Hospital Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialist Dr. Müberra Hraloğlu explained the curiosities about the disease and the measures to be taken.

“The biggest danger of sepsis is that it can deteriorate rapidly”

“Sepsis is when infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites cause an excessive and uncontrolled immune response in the body. This can lead to organ failures and can lead to death if left untreated. The biggest danger of sepsis is that it can worsen rapidly. A person who looks healthy in a short period of time can face life-threatening situations.”

“The elderly, infants and those with chronic diseases are more vulnerable”

Speaking about people at risk, Dr. Hraloğlu said, “People with weakened immune systems, the elderly, infants, those with chronic diseases and those being treated in intensive care units are more vulnerable to sepsis. However, even healthy individuals can get sepsis after a simple infection.”

“Symptoms of sepsis are often indistinguishable from other infections”

Speaking about the symptoms of the disease, Dr. Hraloğlu said, “Although the symptoms of sepsis are often indistinguishable from other infections, a few key signs are important. These include high fever or low body temperature, rapid pulse and breathing, confusion and fatigue, severe pain and weakness. These symptoms can worsen rapidly, so urgent intervention is essential.”

“Treatment is usually done in intensive care with antibiotics and fluid support”

Speaking about sepsis treatment and prevention, Dr. Hraloğlu said, “Sepsis can be fatal if not diagnosed and treated on time. Treatment is usually done in intensive care with antibiotics and fluid support. Therefore, early diagnosis and intervention is life-saving. But the most important thing is to prevent sepsis. Paying attention to simple hygiene rules, keeping vaccinations up to date and taking the symptoms of infection seriously are the main ways to prevent sepsis.”

“Increased awareness is one of the most effective ways to fight the disease”

Speaking about the importance of sepsis awareness, Dr. Hraloğlu finally said the following:

“The aim of World Sepsis Day is to make people more aware of this disease and to emphasize the importance of training for healthcare professionals. Increasing awareness about sepsis is one of the most effective ways to fight the disease. On this special day, as we commemorate the patients, healthcare professionals and those we have lost fighting sepsis, we have to take steps to raise awareness and raise awareness. Because sepsis is not just an infection, it is a life threatening disease.”
