“Cupping” Warning From Experts: “Wrong Practices Cause Lifelong Pain”

While interest in mesotherapy, ozone and cupping treatment, popularly known as cupping, has increased in recent years, experts warned.

Experts said, “People who introduce themselves as ‘experts’ cause great harm to patients. Wrong practices cause pain that may not go away in that patient for a lifetime. There is a constant desire to have a cupping, but this arises from the mistake made in the first application.”

In recent years, interest in acupuncture, mesotherapy, ozone and cupping treatment, popularly known as cupping, which has been practiced in Anatolia for years, has been increasing. Against the increasing interest, the fact that people who are not qualified in the field perform the procedures under inappropriate conditions threatens the health of citizens.

“It causes lifelong pain”

Stating that patients face many negativities as a result of the procedures performed by untrained people in unequipped places, experts said, “We see that there are many people on television, newspapers, media who promote that they provide treatment and even have their own products. Especially after Covid, blood thinners are used very frequently and there is an interaction with blood thinners such as turmeric, which is recommended as harmless. It ensures that the dose of the drugs given is not at the desired level, either the dose needs to be increased or decreased. People who prescribe them without being aware of this and introduce themselves as experts, of course, cause great harm to patients. Cupping, as it is popularly known, is actually done on acupuncture points and this requires a very long training. During the application of wet cupping, some scratches or holes are made on the skin with scalpels or some cutting and piercing tools. If the depth of these cuts and holes is too deep, scar tissue forms on the skin. This scar tissue causes lifelong pain in that patient, perhaps in this area. There is a constant desire to go and have a cupping, but this arises from the mistake made in the first application.”
