Design to facilitate normal birth: Birth ball

With the cooperation of Near East University Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Midwifery and NEU3D Laboratory, a new design birth ball was produced in order to reduce the back and genital area pain experienced during childbirth, shorten the duration of delivery and increase the satisfaction of pregnant women.

Severe back and abdominal pain is one of the most common complaints of women during normal births. From the moment labor begins, increasing back and abdominal pain not only disturbs women, but also causes many of them to fear and avoid normal birth. The new design birth ball, which was produced in cooperation with the Near East University Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Midwifery and NEU3D Laboratory, combines many functions, reducing birth pain and shortening the delivery time, allowing pregnant women to spend the birth process much more comfortably.

Scientific studies show that active movements such as walking, sitting, rocking and springing movements on the ball shorten the duration of labor compared to waiting in a horizontal position. On the other hand, there are also studies showing that back and back massage and warming the genital area reduce labor pains. The new design birth ball, produced in cooperation with the Near East University Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Midwifery and NEU3D Laboratory, gathers these applications, which can be applied independently during the birth process, on a single device.

Registered by the Turkish Patent Institute under the name of Near East University

The innovative birth ball designed by Near East University researchers was produced and started to be used by the NEU3D Laboratory, which operates within the Near East University Innovation and Information Technologies Center and has over a hundred 3D prints. Near East University Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Midwifery Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Betül Mammadov, Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital Department of Pediatric Surgery Pediatric Surgeon Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emil Mammadov and Near East University NEU3D Laboratory Electrical and Electronics Engineer Dr. Görkem Say's “Multifunctional Birth Ball”, which was developed with the work they signed together, was registered as a “Utility Model” on behalf of Near East University by the Turkish Patent Institute. The utility model is granted to protect the property rights of inventions that create a previously unknown product or an improvement in the existing product.

“The projects we develop strengthen our vision”

Near East University Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ said, “We see supporting research and innovation studies that respond to social needs as one of our primary goals” and stated that the 'Multifunctional Birth Ball' project, which was registered as a Utility Model by the Turkish Patent Institute, is one of the results of this approach.

Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ said, “This innovative device, developed in cooperation with our Faculty of Health Sciences and NEU3D Laboratory, is an important step to make the birth process of women more comfortable. The projects we develop strengthen our goal of being a pioneer in health technologies and our vision of producing solutions that touch human life. We believe that this important invention, which will contribute to the birth process, will be of great benefit to mothers and healthcare professionals. Our university's support for interdisciplinary research will continue the emergence of similar innovative projects.”

“It provides a more comfortable birth for pregnant women”

Making a statement about the new design birth ball they developed, Near East University Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Midwifery Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Betül Mammadov said, “The new design birth ball provides a more comfortable birth for pregnant women and increases women's birth satisfaction.”

Stating that although birth is a natural and unique experience, it is a stressful process for pregnant women, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mammadov said, “In the study they conducted with pregnant women using the multifunctional birth ball, the pain scores of pregnant women decreased, pregnant women especially liked the heating and massage function, and their birth satisfaction scores were higher.” Emphasizing the importance of keeping pain and stress under control during childbirth in pregnant women, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mammadov said that with the widespread use of the new design birth ball in clinics, it will provide a more comfortable birth experience for pregnant women.
