These days, when the summer months make their effect felt, the air temperature gives citizens a hard time. Nutrition consumption is also important for health in scorching heat. Dietitian Özge Bolat, who serves in Hatay, made suggestions to minimize health problems in hot weather.
“It is necessary to drink at least 10 glasses of water daily”
Stating that plenty of water should be consumed to reduce the effects of hot weather on the body, Bolat said, “We should eat healthy to reduce the effects of hot weather on our body. In hot weather, the body loses water and electrolytes through sweating. Therefore, it is important to drink plenty of water, consume natural mineral water and consume foods with high electrolyte content. It is necessary to drink at least 10 glasses of water daily. We have to balance the electrolytes we lose through sweat or by consuming foods with high potassium content. Bananas, avocados, spinach, potatoes and oranges, by consuming such foods, we can maintain the electrolyte balance we lose through sweat.”
“Eat light and high-water foods such as salads, fresh fruits and vegetables, yogurt”
Stating that consuming fatty foods in hot weather will make digestion difficult, Dietitian Bolat said, “We should stay away from heavy fats in hot weather. Fatty and heavy meals make digestion difficult and can increase body temperature. Instead, prefer light cooking methods such as grilled, baked and steamed. Caffeinated drinks can cause dehydration. It is therefore important to limit the consumption of coffee, tea and carbonated drinks. Eat light and hydrating foods such as salads, fresh fruit and vegetables and yogurt. You can reduce food portions. Try to eat smaller, frequent and lighter meals instead of large and heavy meals. Instead of sugary and carbonated drinks, drink water, natural mineral water, unsweetened herbal teas and fresh fruit juices. These suggestions will help you stay cool and feel energized in hot weather, stay healthy.”
