Liv Hospital Samsun Pediatrics Specialist. Dr. Nazlı Karakullukçu Çebi made statements about the importance of hand washing in protecting children from winter diseases due to World Hand Washing Day on October 15.

“Hand washing and vaccination are important”

Sharing information about the things to be considered to protect against diseases in cold weather, Uzm. Dr. Çebi said, “Winter is a fearful dream for all parents' children. Schools have opened, many of us have already been on the way to hospitals. Hand hygiene is especially important in protecting our children from diseases. We should definitely give our children the habit of hand washing, most importantly, we should teach them the correct hand washing. The habit of hand washing also prevents most diseases in us adults and keeps us away from germs. Whether they go to school or not, children of all ages should definitely wash their hands frequently.”

“The flu vaccine can help protect against the disease”

Speaking about the precautions to be taken, Uzm. Dr. Çebi said, “As a mother whose both children go to kindergarten and spend the whole winter with a runny nose, I recommend the vaccine and have it done every year. It reduces the frequency and severity of the disease. Well, how should the vaccine be administered to which child? The age of our child is important here, if he/she is under the age of 9 and will be vaccinated for the first time, 2 doses of vaccine should be administered with an interval of 1 month, and the vaccine is administered as half a dose to our children under the age of 3.”

“Natural and seasonal nutrition”

Underlining that regular, balanced, natural and seasonal nutrition of our children is very important for their immune system, Specialist. Dr. Çebi said, “If we consume vegetables and fruits according to the season, we will stay away from hormonal foods. Supplementary medication is not necessarily necessary, but some medications can really make magic touches. Supplementary vitamins taken under the supervision and recommendation of a doctor are among our recommendations. For example, drugs containing beta glucan can increase resistance to colds and are now easily available in every pharmacy. You may benefit from vitamin supplements and various medications that strengthen the immune system, ideally for children aged 2 years and older. For children with special conditions, such as allergies, certain so-called preventive medicines can reduce asthma or respiratory distress attacks, if you take them as prescribed by your doctor.

“Quince leaves and linden should be preferred”

Uzm. Dr. Çebi said the following: “To prevent coughs, let's keep quince leaves and linden ready throughout the winter, there is no harm, there are many benefits. If we mix and brew it, it is pleasant to drink. Again, the recipe for our natural cough syrup is a radish, black pepper and honey; let's hollow out the radish and put black pepper in the bottom, pour honey into it and put it in a large container. When we get up in the morning, our natural cough syrup is ready, you can give your child 3 - 4 teaspoons a day. Of course, we do not give it under the age of 1 because we prepare it with honey. Also, our suggestion for children who have a runny nose and cannot sleep at night due to nasal congestion is this: Peel an onion, cut it into 4 pieces, hang it by the bedside, it will alleviate the discharge to some extent. In case of a cough that disturbs sleep, a cough that interrupts sleep, a flu that lasts more than 1 week, consult a doctor, let's take precautions before the disease progresses. If we take precautions, we do not need to be afraid of the coming winter. I wish my children a healthy winter period.”
