Don't be afraid of what they say about mammography: Very important for early diagnosis
Stating that mammography is one of the most important examinations in the early diagnosis of breast cancer, General Surgeon Op. Dr. Mustafa Arısoy said, “There are discourses about mammography such as ‘it causes cancer, it is very harmful’. Of course, radiation has known cancer-causing effects, but the dose of radiation received in mammography examinations is not at a level that will cause cancer. Therefore, this is an urban legend. Therefore, every woman over the age of 40 should have a mammogram every 2 years.”
The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated 'October 1-31 as Breast Cancer Awareness and Awareness Month' in order to emphasize the importance of early diagnosis in breast cancer and breast cancer awareness. General Surgeon Op. Dr. Mustafa Arısoy from Çakmak Erdem Hospital gave various information. Stating that breast cancer is an important problem in the world and Turkey, Op. Dr. Arısoy said, “According to 2020 data, 100 thousand female patients were diagnosed with cancer in Turkey. Of these, 24 thousand of them are breast cancer. Approximately one in 4, this is a very high rate,” he said.
“Mammograms are performed free of charge at Cancer Early Detection Centers”
Stating that breast cancer is a disease between the ages of 45-55, but it can also be seen at an earlier age, Op. Dr. Arısoy said, “The fact that awareness is increasing strengthens our hand a little more for treatment. As awareness increases, early diagnosis increases. Breast cancer incidence rates are also increasing. Mammography is one of the most important screening methods for early diagnosis of breast cancer. X-rays are taken by applying X-rays to the breast. The Ministry of Health also has recommendations on this subject. Especially after the age of 40, women are included in the screening program with mammography. They have serious studies on this issue. Mammograms are performed free of charge at Cancer Early Diagnosis Centers. In the absence of any risk factors, women should have a mammogram every 2 years after the age of 40. This period should not be exceeded too much.”
“The dose of radiation given during mammography has gradually decreased”
Op. Dr. Arısoy added the following:
“Radiation is received during mammography. The dose of radiation received here is negligibly low. Of course, there are known cancer-causing effects of radiation, but the dose of radiation received in mammography examinations is not cancer-causing. Therefore, this is an urban legend. Therefore, it is necessary to be a little more conscious and not to direct people negatively that this test causes cancer. Because mammography is one of the most important examinations that reduces the mortality rate in patients with early diagnosis. In addition, with the developing technology, the dose of radiation given during mammography has gradually decreased. Especially digital mammographies can perform these shots by giving the patient a minimum level of radiation. There are new methods called tomosynthesis. And with the advancement of technology, the dose of radiation given here is gradually decreasing.”
“Go for breast control at least once a year from the age of 20”
“Women should check themselves regularly when their menstrual periods are over,” Op. Dr. Arısoy warned and finally said, ”If they feel something like a mass, they should consult a doctor. From the age of 20, they should go to breast control at least once a year. In the ultrasound performed during the control, no radiation or radiation is received, they should not hesitate in any way.”
