Don't lose your hand when opening a can

Aesthetic Plastic Reconstructive Surgery specialist Assoc. Dr. Neşe Kurt Özkaya warned citizens by emphasizing that cuts that occur while opening canned food should not be taken lightly.

Cuts that occur while opening canned food, which is a common situation in the kitchen, can bring some health risks. Sivas Medicana Hospital Aesthetic Plastic Reconstructive Surgery specialist Assoc. Dr. Neşe Kurt Özkaya emphasized that these cuts should not be taken lightly, even if the size of the cuts that occur is small. Stating that this situation, which is frequently encountered especially in the kitchen, should be taken seriously, Özkaya emphasized that cuts can carry the risk of infection and can lead to serious health problems in case of improper care. Pointing out that the tools used to open canned food are sharp, Özkaya said, “Although cuts usually look superficial, deep wounds can occur. Such wounds carry the risk of infection if not cleaned and cared for properly.” Özkaya added that cuts should be cleaned, antiseptic should be applied and if necessary, a health institution should be consulted. He also emphasized the need to be careful in the kitchen and use the right tools.

“You have to be very careful”

Stating that children are more at risk than adults, Özkaya said: “With the change in our eating habits, the use of canned food has become a part of our daily lives. In the past, canned foods were mostly ready-to-cook foods, but now they contain products such as fish, corn, garnishes ready to eat and drink. These products are usually stored in glass or metal cans. Home and work accidents can occur when people use different methods or act carelessly while opening the iron metal parts on the edges of the cans. Although there are hand, finger and wrist cuts, it can cause not only superficial skin cuts, but also cuts to the tendons that move the fingers and hand or nerve vascular injuries and even joint damage. As working parents, we allow our children to use these products at home for practical purposes. But you need to be very careful because children may be more at risk than adults.”

“Late repair reduces chances of success”
Emphasizing that these cases should not be taken lightly, Özkaya said, “We used to encounter these cases in the past, but their incidence has increased these days. First aid is very important in such cuts. Then a good examination and intervention is required. Although some cuts seem small and are taken lightly, they can later realize the seriousness of this. When they have a tendon cut, they don't notice the pain and shortness of movement. As time passes, they realize that they cannot use their hands comfortably. Then much more adverse situations arise. Late repair reduces the chance of success more. In this respect, our patients are at risk. These cases should never be taken lightly. Even if the size of the cut is small according to the person, you should definitely go to a health institution. Tetanus vaccine and antibiotic treatment should be applied.”
