Dr. Atasoy: “Breast milk protects the baby from many diseases”

Yalova Training and Research Hospital Pediatrics Specialist Dr. Bahriye Semizoğlu Atasoy said, “We want a baby to be fed only with breast milk for the first 6 months. This protects a baby from many diseases.”

On the occasion of “World Breastfeeding Week”, Yalova Training and Research Hospital Pediatrics Specialist Dr. Bahriye Semizoğlu Atasoy stated that the first three days of antibody-laden milk is according to the needs of the baby. Saying that the structure of the milk then changes and is shaped according to the needs of the baby, Atasoy said:

“Breast milk is divided into two during breastfeeding: foremilk and hindmilk. As the mother breastfeeds the baby, the fat content of the last milk increases. This meets the calorie needs of the baby. We want a baby to be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months. This protects a baby from many diseases. It protects against cancers, reduces the frequency of middle ear infections such as lymphoma. It reduces the risk of babies developing allergies. If a baby is prone to allergies, it delays the onset of symptoms. It also ensures a high level of intelligence in babies. It is also easy to digest.”

Atasoy said that the pacifier causes the baby's mouth and tooth structure to deteriorate and also causes rejection of breast milk.

Dr. Meltem Aydoğdu, Faculty Member of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, stated that breastfeeding reduces the bleeding of the mother after birth.

Pointing out that breastfeeding also protects the mother from anemia, Aydoğdu said, “Breastfeeding provides a secure attachment between the baby and the mother and is also protective against depression. The hormone secreted with breastfeeding is the happiness hormone we know. So you can breastfeed a lot and be happy a lot. Breastfeeding also helps the mother to lose weight after childbirth. Breastfeeding at frequent and regular intervals makes the mother lose weight quickly.”

Midwife Gülnur Çimen, the instructor of the hospital's Pregnancy School, said that trainings have been held in the pregnancy school since 2023, and that obstetricians, pediatricians, physiotherapists, dieticians, psychologists and midwives have participated in the trainings.
