Yalova Training and Research Hospital Deputy Chief Physician Urology Specialist Dr. Faculty Member Musa Karabulut said, “People with a family history of prostate cancer should be examined by a urologist every year from the age of 40, and if there is no familial risk, from the age of 50.”
Dr. Karabulut made statements due to September 15 Prostate Cancer Awareness Day. He said that the prostate is a walnut-sized organ located under the bladder in men, through which the urinary canal passes. Stating that the function of the organ is to produce some enzymes and secretions that will help reproduction, Dr. Karabulut said, “Prostate cancer is a type of cancer that occurs with uncontrolled and irregular growth of these normal prostate gland cells. It ranks second among cancer types in men. We can even say that it is one of the first cancer types in men after the age of 70.”
Emphasizing that the risk of prostate cancer in a man's lifetime is approximately 17 to 20 percent, Dr. Karabulut said:
“This is a very high number. Therefore, it is very important for us to catch it at an early stage. When it is caught in this early period, the chance of success is very high, almost like being treated. This early diagnosis can only be revealed through screening tests. We can make the diagnosis especially with PSA and finger examination. Prostate cancer is a very insidious disease. It is almost asymptomatic before the late stage. When it is in the late stage, the symptoms give symptoms like benign enlargement of the normal prostate, especially as a result of the growth of prostate cancer and its pressure on the urinary canal. What is this, frequent urination, weak urine may be symptoms. In addition, due to the growth of cancer, blood coming from semen and urine, in later stages, it may manifest itself as back and hip pain due to spread to the bones, but already at this stage, the patient is in the delayed period.”
“Early diagnosis is very important for us”
Stating that they especially want to catch the disease before it is too late, Dr. Karabulut said, “This prostate cancer is especially rare under the age of 40. We can diagnose cancer especially after the age of 50 or even 65. Therefore, early diagnosis is very important. People with a family history of prostate cancer should be examined by a urologist for prostate cancer every year from the age of 40, and if there is no such familial risk, from the age of 50. As we said, if there is prostate cancer in the first degree relatives such as father, brother or uncle in the family, they should definitely come to the doctor, urologist for examination from the age of 40. Early diagnosis is very important for us. In some cases, we can almost cure the disease with early diagnosis. When he comes, we do at least a prostate examination by looking for PSA in the blood and finger examination. If a suspicion arises in this, we do further examinations and make the actual diagnosis by performing a prostate biopsy.”
Giving information about the treatment methods, Dr. Karabulut said, “When we catch the disease at an early stage, we can treat the disease by removing the prostate with surgical treatment. We also have treatment types such as radiation, hormone therapy and chemotherapy as alternative treatments.”
