“Early diagnosis in breast cancer saves lives”

Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Mertsoylu stated that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women and said, “It ranks second among cancer-related deaths. However, with early diagnosis, the rate of complete recovery in breast cancer is quite high.”

Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Mertsoylu from Medical Park Adana Hospital emphasized that more than 65 percent of breast cancer cases in the United States and many European countries are detected at Stage 1 or Stage 2; only 5 percent are diagnosed at Stage 4 (metastatic) and said, “Early diagnosis is vital for the successful treatment of breast cancer and for patients to lead a healthy life. In Turkey, 20 percent of cases are still detected at the metastatic stage. Regular screening tests are of great importance to prevent this delay.”

“Mammography is recommended every two years from the age of 40”

Stating that according to the breast cancer screening program implemented by the Ministry of Health across Turkey, mammography is recommended for all women every two years from the age of 40, Prof. Dr. Mertsoylu said, “It is important to start screening at an earlier age, especially for women with a family history of breast cancer or genetic risk carriers such as BRCA1 or BRCA2. Women in this high-risk group should be followed up closely by using additional imaging methods such as breast MRI along with mammography. This not only detects the disease earlier, but also significantly improves survival and quality of life.”

“There are also promising developments for metastatic breast cancer”

Mertsoylu stated that with the introduction of Trastuzumab (an antibody used to treat breast cancer and stomach cancer) in 1998, a significant increase in the duration and quality of life was achieved, especially in patients with HER2-positive breast cancer, and said, “Since then, many new targeted therapies have been developed, and the duration and quality of life have increased significantly even in metastatic disease. Thanks to these treatments, many women living with metastatic breast cancer can lead an active life for many years.”

“Remember, screening saves lives”

Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Mertsoylu said, “For early detection of breast cancer, do not neglect self-examination and participate in regular screening programs offered by the Ministry of Health. Especially women with a family history or genetic predisposition should take these important steps to protect their own health. Early diagnosis of breast cancer is life-saving. In this awareness month, contribute to women's healthy lives by informing them.”
