Early diagnosis in scoliosis saves children from surgery

Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Specialist Assoc. Dr. Dilek Eker Büyükşireci said that early diagnosis, which saves lives in cancer, also saves children from surgery in scoliosis.

When a healthy human spine is viewed from the back, the head, neck, back and waist lie in a straight line. In scoliosis, this line is distorted in the curvature of the spine and the spine bends to the right or left. Assoc. Dr. Dilek Eker Büyükşireci, one of the doctors of Medicana Health Group, stated that it is vital to know about scoliosis in children between the ages of 9-17 in advance and made explanations.

If you have these symptoms, your child may have scoliosis

Stating that failure to diagnose scoliosis early will lead to serious health problems as well as cosmetic problems, Medicana International Samsun Hospital Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dilek Eker Büyükşireci said, “Scoliosis is an important health problem that threatens the future of children in the growing age (9-17 years). Since it occurs most frequently in young girls, adolescence, and during the period of rapid growth, we as parents should pay attention to our children in the growth and development age in this respect. If it is not detected in time, besides cosmetic problems, back pain, heart and lung problems may occur in adulthood. When we look at children in the growth and development stage from behind, if the height of the shoulders or hips is not equal, if there is an asymmetry in the spine while standing or if a hump appears on the back while leaning forward, if our children experience back, back and neck pain, our parents should be alert to the possibility of scoliosis in the child. In addition to physical examination, we use scoliosis X-rays to diagnose scoliosis. If the angle of curvature, which we call 'cobb angle' in scoliosis x-ray, is above 10 degrees, it indicates that the child has scoliosis.”

“Early diagnosis in scoliosis saves our children from surgery”

Pointing out that children who are diagnosed early can regain their health without the need for surgery with the necessary physical therapy methods, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Büyükşireci said, “In general, one of 3 ways is followed in the treatment of scoliosis patients. In individuals with a curvature angle below 20 degrees, we utilize observation or scoliosis-specific exercises at certain intervals. The most well-known of these are Schroth exercises. If the angle of curvature is between 20-40 degrees, it is necessary to use a corset. With the use of a corset, we aim to stop the progression of scoliosis and provide non-surgical treatment. The surgical treatment option is usually considered for curvatures above 45-50 degrees. Our goal in treatment is to ensure that our child completes the growth phase with a curvature angle below 40 degrees. Just as early diagnosis saves lives in cancer, early diagnosis in scoliosis saves our children from surgery. For this reason, it is extremely important for all our parents to be careful about scoliosis, especially during adolescence, when our children's growth and height growth is the highest.”
