In Sivas, due to Skin Cancer Awareness Month, citizens were screened for skin cancer and attention was drawn to the importance of early diagnosis in skin cancer.
An awareness event was organized due to skin cancer, which is common all over the world and can cause deaths. Citizens were informed about skin cancer during the scans in Kayseri, Konya and Sivas. Making a statement on the subject, Sivas Cumhuriyet University Dermatology Department Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Tosun said, "This week is Euro Melanoma Week. In 1999, it was initiated by European dermatologists in terms of skin awareness, and our country joined this campaign in 2014. We have a skin cancer disease called melanoma. Early diagnosis is an important disease. We aimed to raise awareness about it and make evaluations in terms of biopsy of moles. We started today in the morning. One of the three centers in the Central Anatolia Region was Sivas. The other provinces are Konya and Kayseri. With our dermoscopy device here, we examined our patients and mapped their moles. If they have suspicious lesions, we made the necessary referrals. If the moles are growing, have asymmetry or are over 6 millimeters in size, have many moles, have a family history of skin cancer and sun exposure, we made the necessary referrals. We wanted to raise awareness of our patients on these issues."
Increase in skin cancer cases
Giving various advice to citizens, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Tosun said, "Especially those who are exposed to the sun too much should definitely be protected from the sun. Skin cancer cases have increased in recent years. With the ozone layer pierced, it became easier for ultraviolet rays to reach the world. Therefore, we see more cases of skin cancer. If there are moles in open areas of the body, if there is a history of skin cancer in their relatives, we apply to dermatology polyclinics and provide controls with the necessary devices. Early intervention is important. If it is late, it may spread and treatment becomes difficult. For this reason, chemotherapeutic drugs may need to be used."
